Revisiting my favorite local restaurant with Nadi

I often complain that even though there are thousands of restaurants in Da Nang that all of them seem to serve just minor variations of all the other shops. Everyone has a menu that is so similar to the next place that there really isn't any reason to shop based on anything other than price. The low-cost places kill it but at very small margins and anyone that joins the marketplace tends to simply make exactly the same thing. It doesn't make sense to me that someone would open a shop that sells exactly the same crap as everyone else and expect to do well and honestly, almost all of them do NOT do well and close pretty rapidly.

There is one exception though and the place in my hood is called "Section 30."

They have a chef there that is constantly rotating specials and for the most part, these end up being pretty good. You may not even know what the specials are unless you venture inside because the specials board is not visible from the street or even most of the seating area, which is strange.

There are 3 signs on the wall above the service window to the kitchen and the one on the far right is the real special. The other two are pretend specials that haven't changed since I have been going there.

For the most part I wander into this place for a glass of wine and just order whatever is written up there without any concern to what it is. I'm not really a huge fan of pizza because it is so common, but nobody else in town has a buffalo chicken pizza.

The main reason why I go here though is because Nadi really likes it there because it is comfortable and the staff are really nice to her.

There she is, patiently waiting for the next staff member to walk by and say hello to her. She is not a cuddling fan, so after you give her a boop on the head or something she is already ready for you to stop touching her. I know a ton of dogs that will just be wagging their tails off in anticipation of you touching them... Nadi is not one of those dogs. For the most part if you don't have snacks, she isn't very interested in talking to you.

I do like the fact that almost all of the staff here (and there are a lot of them) know Nadi's name but I don't think any of them actually know my name.

Anyway, back to the special pizza.

I don't think many people order this because they seemed a bit surprised and confused when I ordered it. But the chef in the kitchen recognized me and even brought it out to my table himself. I think maybe I have some sort of accidental status here and therefore get special treatment.

Well, as far as the pizza goes, unfortunately it wan't really all that special and there really isn't much that could be done to change that. I love buffalo wings, and I really like cheese and bread and blue cheese dressing but for the most part this just kind of seemed like a mess. I ate about 4 slices and then asked for a box because I knew I would stop by a particular pub that is on my walk home and just offer it to the people that were there.

I offered the same deal to everyone in the pub whether I knew them or not. You can have a free slice of pizza if you pet Nadi and say hello and you also have to promise to save a tiny piece of your slice to give to her.

Within 10 minutes the pizza was gone and most of the people agreed with what I had said: The pizza is "fine" but it really isn't anything special. Now it is just a shame because I know that they are not going to change that special on that board for quite some time. I only go in there when the special changes because even though I do like Section 30, they too have a menu that is basically the exact same crap that everyone else has as well.

At least doggo got to get out and talk to some of her human friends and that is a win no matter what the day is.

Sort:

Ugh. That pizza didn't even look good. Glad they treat Nadi nice though. And, you were able to meet new people and get Nadi some pettings. Not too bad. Hope your next trip there has a better food experience.

Reading this, reminds me of myself walking pass china town restaurants stating authentic Chinese special mala soup, compare to what I've tasted in Sichuan China, it's absolutely nothing special 😌 I got that, it's like you look at the bowl of red and spicy soup that's supposed to be "special", the moment you took a bite... It came with a combination of smoke Chicken juice and Brinjal coconut pancakes.

That's funny because I kind of feel like things are the same over here. Most bars all have the same things on their menu. Whenever my wife and I go out she usually gets some kind of chicken wrap and when I ask her how it was, she says "it was a chicken wrap".

You would like to think that if the chef/cook has a special then he knows how to do this well and it should be very good and not just ok or nothing special. If he had done a good pizza that everyone liked then you would have generated a ton of new business for him with your pet Nadi for a slice campaign.

Nadi loves pizza day.. now if you would just come back when they're making cheese steaks..

Wow Nadi is so cute and adorable! The pizza looks so appetizing and yummy!☺️

wow that’s a really interesting take on all the restaurants in da nang it makes sense why you'd feel frustrated with so many duplicates. section 30 sounds like a great find though!
