Earlier today, a sales agent from one of our suppliers dropped by the office to visit our boss and brought some Christmas gifts along with him. Luckily for us, he didn’t come empty-handed for the rest of the team either. As a small treat for our snack break, he brought empanadas. At first, I wasn’t really planning to blog about it—it was just supposed to be a simple office snack. But the moment I took my first bite, something unexpected happened. It brought back a wave of memories from my high school days.
Back then, there was a particular chicken empanada sold in our school canteen. It was so popular that it would sell out quickly, especially during breaks. You had to be early if you wanted to get one. That chicken empanada was honestly one of the best I’ve ever tasted, even up to now. I think that’s why almost every student lined up for it whenever it was available.
At around 12 pesos each, it was already considered expensive for me at the time. My daily pocket money was only 20 pesos, so buying one meant making a tough decision. If I bought an empanada in the morning, I knew I wouldn’t have enough left to buy food later in the day. Because of that, every bite felt special. I didn’t rush eating it—I made sure to savor every mouthful, knowing it was both a treat and a small sacrifice.
Fast forward to today, sitting at the office with an empanada in hand, I couldn’t help but smile at how food has a way of bringing back simple but meaningful memories. What started as an ordinary snack turned into a moment of nostalgia, reminding me of a time when even the smallest treats felt like a reward. Sometimes, it’s the simplest food that carries the most memories.
