Summer Barbeque - doing it the Hong Kong way

in Summer Vibes2 months ago

This weekend we had our annual family summer barbeque. They're always a big affair, 23 old and young hearts this year. The weather forecast was stormy and got us a bit worried. Luckily we only had a light drizzle of rain for 10 minutes and then it cleared up.

The star of the show is this little fella, the suckling roast pig. It's a delicacy in Hong Kong cuisine normally eaten at festivals and celebrations. Ideally the little piglet should be less than a month old so it doesn't have too much meat and the skin is nice and soft.

Young piglets are quite difficult to find in the UK unless you know a farmer who can slaughter one for you. We had to get this one from the Chinese supermarket and judging by it's size, this one is definitely older than a month, but that's ok.

Unlike the suckling pigs in Spain and Portugal, the Hong Kong style suckling pigs are eaten for it's crispy skin and the thin layer of tender meat underneath. That's why the age of the piglet is quite important. We don't get to eat it often in the UK and Chinese restaurants don't have it readily on their menu as it takes a lot of effort to make and it's best eaten fresh. We always look forward to it when my brother in law makes it during our family gathering. This one was delicious and was the most popular dish of the day.

Roast duck is also a very popular Hong Kong dish. This one we often have at family dinners. I don't know how to make it but all my brother in laws does, so there's no need for me to learn. I just eat 😄 We had three at the BBQ and that all got gobbled up quick.

I was responsible for some of the other more simpler stuff like the pork and fish balls, but I forgot about the glazing so they turned out a little dry. We also had chicken wings and prawns , those were delicious. As was the baked fish, ie those two big parcels. One was salt baked, and the other simply with spring onion and a chilli. I forgot to take photos of them when they were done.

In fact I forgot to take many photos of the food, I was busy eating after the hard work on the barbie. We took the opportunity to do some family photos even though only two thirds of the family was present (yes I have a big family!!). Those of course those will stay private off chain. But here's one of me playing with one of the kids on her swing.

23 people make up only two-thirds of your family? 😯 Wow, that's indeed a big family and let me tell you a secret... I wish I were one of these twenty-three hearts and could attend this delicious annual summer barbeque party! By the way, it has been many years, maybe decades, since I last ate roast pig this way. The crispy skin and the tender meat are the perfect combination 🤤

I think Mister Summer pushed away the stormy clouds so this family gathering can happen! He also says thank you for sharing your tasty summer vibes! 💫

Thank you very much 😇

So it seems many nations also eat piglets as well, that's nice to know.

It's a little tricky to find the right summer vibe moment in UK, glad I caught it just in time

We had Chinese on Friday night, just a good old takeaway. We were so hungry after our trip to Whipsnade Zoo!!

Looks like you feasted upon some great food! We had a family BBQ early in the summer up in Northampton with my in laws and had a great time.

Planning another this month with my uncle and aunt, cousins and their children.

Summer BBQ in UK are always a bit tricky, can never plan for the weather. Hopefully you'll have a great one with your uncle and his family

There is nothing more valuable than time spent with family. We now have a new member in our family, and these days we are completely focused on spending time with her. By the way, of course, you need a big family to eat all this food 🤣🤣

Hope you, and especially you, are all welcoming your newest family member and taking good care of her. Enjoy your honeymoon!

Thank you so much, We returned from our honeymoon and are now visiting our elders in accordance with our traditions 🙂

Good food and with the family? Surely a great day!

We also had that version of roasted pig , we called letchon in our language. Though the pig age is older, huge pig enough for celebration enough for the brgy.

Though there are some resto who offer pigs day old like yours.

I've heard about letchon before and it looks so mouth watering when I see people share it on Hive.

Looks like it was quite the spread. We used to do full pig roasts when I was a kid for graduation parties. The food was always so delicious. Quite a bit bigger than these young ones though. I am going to cross post this into my grilling community that I created.

Ah! It's grilling! I was looking for BBQ and couldn't find it. No wonder 😅

Thanks for the cross post

Anytime!

That looks like an incredible feast! I'm intrigued by the duck. I've never eaten duck that way but it looks delicious 😋

If you've ever had roast duck in a Chinese restaurant before, that's what it looks like before it's served. We go through a lot of during family dinners😊

I don't think I have had roasted duck at a Chinese restaurant. Is it the same as a Peking Duck? I've never had that but always wanted to try it. They look so delicious hanging in the windows of some restaurants

With Peking duck, you just eat the skin, maybe with a sliver of meat. You'd place that on a thin pancake, with shreds of spring onion and cucumber, and some of the sauce and wrap it up like a cigar to eat.

Hong Kong style roast duck will be chopped up in small pieces before served. You might even see some places chopping them up in front of the window or by the counter.Sometimes they may debone it if westerners don't fancy nibbling at the bone, but we prefer to have it served in the bone.

Hope you get to try it some time

Okay gotcha. Interesting. Ya I definitely hope to try, well both of these styles of duck at some point. They both sound really good.

Congratulations you have been curated and upvoted by @ecency

I was literally salivating seeing the roasted pig. It’s always a great time when it’s spent with a family that shares a lot of things in common.

Good thing the weather was fair enough.

!PIMP

Having good weather helps a lot as well, we were very lucky!

I can’t even begin to imagine everything getting ruined because of the weather. I’m not there but I would feel bad, lol.

I love family gatherings. In my country, young pork is eaten a lot, so we cook it often. Yes, it is best when there is no fat. In my experience, I always buy a cleaned young pig weighing 18 to 20 kg, and then roast it. It is not fatty, and it is so delicious.

Yes, family gatherings are a great thing. Do you have a large family as well?
I don't know how heavy our piglet was but I know it took quite a while to prep and roast, that's why we don't have it often. It's always a treat when we do

Yes, my family is big and I'm happy about it. I buy a 20 kg pig. The best meat. A little patience and it will be baked.

20kg is quite big, you'll need that much for your big family! I asked today, and our piggie was about 7kg

OMG!!! That suckling pig has made me so hungry!!!! Even though it's 4:00am on this side of the world I would certainly eat it now if I had it...it looks delicious!!! Although to be honest, everything you show looks appetizing 😋. It's good to have a big family, so the gatherings are more fun 😊. Un abrazo 🤗

More people, more food, more fun. What's not to love! 😊

😄 It’s been two days since I saw that mouthwatering post, and I can still smell it lingering around here! Absolutely stunning! I love roast pork!

We took a doggy bag home and had more the next day 😄

Obviously, not doing so would be a waste. Hahaha... I would have done the same.

Oh, wow. You grilled up a feast.

Technically not me, by I contributed by eating 😋

That is important too. It validates the good work of the cook. 😎

Wish I were there. 😍😍😍🤤🤤🤤

When will you come to visit ? 😉😄

This looks like such a fun and delicious family day! 😍 I've never tried Hong Kong-style suckling pig before but now I’m really curious—crispy skin sounds sooo good

Crispy skin and a thin layer of tender meat with it, is the best 😋

Spending time with our family has been some of the most precious time we've ever had. Happy to see this kind of bonding with people we love.

Some family members lives far away so we always treasure the time be we spend together

A barbecue with family is truly one of the happiest moments in life. And I think the Hong Kong style suckling pig made the whole event even more special. Your writing style throughout the blog was excellent.

Thanks!

Welcome my friend and take ❤️

That suckling roast pig looks absolutely delicious 💖 It's so cool that you keep up with the Hong Kong style of eating it 🙌 It's funny how the best food photos are the ones we forget to take because we're too busy enjoying the moment 💕 Thanks for sharing a peek into your traditions ✨

Wow! You know how to throw a party. The meat from the Pig on a stick looks unbelievable 👏🏻

I'm glad the weather behaved and ye only got a sprinkling of drizzle.

The shot of bubbles and flowers is a great one
