One of my favorite veggies are sweet potatoes. Have been ever since I was a baby. And rightfully so, because they are awesome! Not to mention full of nutrients and make a great staple food for the garden. I ordered some @run-a-muck-farms green buckets from Amazon so that it matched my mantra, haha, and they came in like 2 days early! So bonus, gave me a homestead chore for the day!
I found these buckets, which were food grade as well, and the perfect color green which will match the farm logo perfectly. They are 5 gallon buckets and I will be planting 1 plant in each as per my Tractor Supply guy and verified by Grok, haha.
What was awesome is that I paid $6 for the entire flat of 6 plants! I thought I was going to have to pay the $6 6 times, so that was a huge bonus. I already had the dirt left over from another project, so what a better way to put it to use.
Next step is to drill drain holes in the buckets. You certainly don't want to deal with any root rot, considering a potato is a root... This is where I get to bust out the Dewalt 20V drill and make it happen!
You can drill a couple of holes, but I did 5 in most and 6 in another because I don't know, things didn't line up right on the last one so I had to make it look better geometrically... Touch of the 'tism I guess, haha.
Now comes the fun part of playing in the dirt. I started filling the buckets with this dirt that is supposed to be for in-ground plants, but whatever, it's dirt, so I used it, haha. Got my buckets all filled up with 2.5 bags of soil. Each bag is 2 cubic feet, so they are the big bags.
Next up was the planting of the sweet potato plants! I had to carefully pull the roots away from the tray, which some ripped off, but it seems to be fine. Everything stayed in tact while I planted all 6 plants into their own buckets.
Now it's time to place them in their spots in the garden. I have the perfect spot for all of them in between the raised beds!
Two of them had to be placed together in the back, but they fit perfect in the space.
So now I have 6 sweet potato plants that will hopefully yield me a bunch of awesome goodness in a few months so that we will have a stock for the winter!
Everything is starting to come together here on the homestead! It's a slow and expensive process, but we are making it happen! So now all I need to do is to nurture all my plants and let them grow and produce us some awesome food for the farm!
Hopefully I can be an inspiration for you to try and grow some food for yourself! Even if it's just something as small as some lettuce or herbs, start replacing store bought crap with some awesome self-grown goodness!
Until next time...
Be cool, be real, and always abide with you my dudes!
