If the idea is that he enjoyed sports and friendships and that he gave his best in competitions, without seeing the other teammates as rivals.
Those values imposed by Hollywood movies, of competence, ego and supremacy usually end up hurting children, who feel frustrated if they are not the best, and end up causing envy and conflict.The story suggests that there is another way to see life and do things.
