Back when I started using this, or better said, the legacy platform, I had a web2 cooking blog, that I shared my recipes on, with a handful of cooking enthusiasts I met throughout my blog and the platform. It was a nice distraction from the everyday life and (back then) it paid quite nicely as well.
Hive was a totally different matter though, as I could not only deviate from the niche I established myself in on the other, web2 platform, but could also meet a lot of different people from all over the world. This had a reason and I'll tell you what it was.
The main question I had to answer to myself, when I started blogging on this platform was, what kind of language I want to focus on and after a short thinking, I opted for English. The reason behind this decision was the obvious one. My goal was to practice my English, but also to be able to reach a broader audience, which, with my mother tongue would be excluded for sure. There are only a handful of users speaking Hungarian on the platform.
Plan & Reality
We all know the difference between web2 and web3, and at some point, I thought it would be great to save my previous work and bring my cooking content over to Hive, as I had no control over the other platform and was at the mercy of the service provider.
Theoretically it can be done, but as having no pressure to stick to a niche (and this was the best thing), the number of topics I could write about was (still is) endless, so this plan got delayed, postponed or put on hold, whatever term you wan to use.
It was the monetization issue as well, as copy pasting previously posted content here would be something I wouldn't do, so I started a dedicated account with cooking profile exclusively but time made me stick to what I enjoy the most and the result is obvious.
Anyway, looking back after a decade or so, you see things in a different light, with different eyes and not just about your project, but in general. You see (if you are smart), how much the world and our life has changed.
Back a good few decades ago, cooking books were real treasures and most women had a cooking notebook, in which they had all the favorite recipes written down. Slowly, but surely, life started to change and with widespread internet and mobile devices, the options regarding recipes and related videos took over. This, however was not the final phase as today so many are opting to ask AI for help and cut the time spend with browsing through the culinary jungle.
Personally I'm not there yet, I mean I've used AI to look for recipes, but do I trust it 100%? No, not in this case. At this day, I still prefer to see the photos of the dish and read feedbacks as well, if possible. I don't care if you judge me, it's ok, but as long as I have more than one option, I'm going to always go with what I think it's best for me.
Sunsetting My Plan
When I went to check those recipes, kind of knew what to expect, but still was surprised to see the quality of those photos. Compare the specs of devices available ten or fifteen years ago to what we have today. Updating and posting those recipes would be a huge waste of time. Maybe I can create a nice and successful website, but in a few years it would peak and go downhill.
Tested Reality
Over the years, I've collected different cooking books and recipes cut out of different magazines and saved them for ..., for what? For one day? I can honestly admit that most of it has been sitting in my drawer ever since and whenever I needed a recipe, the first thing I did was access my search engine and look for a recipe online.
Now that I'm decluttering and selling whatever I don't need, I put those individual recipes cut out from magazines ans listed them for sale. Is anyone interested? Come on, wake up, it's 2026. So I'm going to lower the price and still sell it for whatever I can, but this shows a clear path to digital and AI future in this regard.
