Saludos hivers. Una de las cosas más importantes para la supervivencia de la vida en este planeta, son las semillas. Las semillas llevan dentro de sus pequeñas formas y tamaños, parte del secreto de la vida, no en vano, existen los bancos de semillas o bancos de germoplasma en muchas ciudades y países. Estos lugares tienen como objetivo conservar la mayor cantidad de especies para garantizar tanto la diversidad vegetal como el alimento en casos de catástrofes, cambio climático, etc.

Hello, hivers. One of the most important things for the survival of life on this planet are seeds. Within their tiny shapes and sizes, seeds carry part of the secret of life. It's no wonder seed banks or germplasm banks exist in many cities and countries. These places aim to conserve the greatest number of species to guarantee both plant diversity and food in cases of catastrophes, climate change, etc.

Para garantizar la soberanía alimentaria, cada país debe enfocarse en fortalecer y mejorar la producción de los rubros locales, y a su vez, promover maneras ecológicas y libres de agrotóxicos y modificaciones genéticas en las semillas autóctonas para que así, las personas puedan consumir frutas y vegetales saludables, confiables y nutritivos que conserven sus propiedades naturales.

To guarantee food sovereignty, each country must focus on strengthening and improving local crop production and, in turn, promote ecological methods free of agrochemicals and genetic modifications in native seeds so that people can consume healthy, reliable, and nutritious fruits and vegetables that retain their natural properties.

El viernes asistí al Encuentro de Intercambio de Semillas y Saberes Ancestrales que se realizó en la Escuela Agroecológica Indio Rangel en La Victoria (Aragua), Venezuela. Este evento fue organizado por el Movimiento Tuqueque Diversidad Biológica y la Escuela Agroecológica Indio Rangel, en el mismo, participaron voceros y miembros de organizaciones como Inparques (Instituto Nacional de parques), algunos partidos políticos, estudiantes y profesores del Liceo de Zuata, la dirección de agricultura del municipio Tovar (Colonia Tovar), entre otros.

On Friday, I attended the Seed and Ancestral Knowledge Exchange Meeting held at the Indio Rangel Agroecological School in La Victoria (Aragua), Venezuela. This event was organized by the Tuqueque Biological Diversity Movement and the Indio Rangel Agroecological School. Spokespeople and members of organizations such as Inparques (National Parks Institute), several political parties, students and teachers from Zuata High School, the Tovar Municipal Agriculture Department (Colonia Tovar), and others participated.

Aunque llegué tarde al conversatorio porque estaba lloviendo, el enfoque del mismo estuvo en resaltar el rol fundamental de la producción agroecológica y el conocimiento ancestral como pilares para alcanzar la autonomía alimentaria, así como la protección de nuestras semillas campesinas y la construcción de un futuro alimentario más justo y sostenible para todos.

Although I arrived late to the discussion because it was raining, the focus was on highlighting the fundamental role of agroecological production and ancestral knowledge as pillars for achieving food autonomy, as well as the protection of our peasant seeds and the construction of a more just and sustainable food future for all.

The recommendation phase for nutrients and/or fertilizers is complex and requires: a good diagnosis of current fertility, knowledge of soil properties and composition, and how they influence the fertilizers used, and adequate knowledge of the crop and its nutrient requirements. En la sala había un gran mesón donde algunos de los participantes habían llevado una muestra de las semillas que ellos mismos producen. Los expositores eran la Escuela Agroecológica Indio Rangel, Misión Robinson del municipio Revenga, el cuerpo civil de guardaparques que forman parte de Inparques (Instituto Nacional de parques), Movimiento Tuqueque Diversidad Biológica, y algunos expositores independientes.

In the room, there was a large table where some of the participants had brought samples of the seeds they produce themselves. The exhibitors were the Indio Rangel Agroecological School, the Robinson Mission of the Revenga municipality, the civilian park ranger corps that is part of Inparques (National Parks Institute), the Tuqueque Biological Diversity Movement, and several independent exhibitors.

Si bien el conversatorio estaba enfocado principalmente hacia el cultivo y producción de semillas que nos proporcionan alimentos, también se habló de la importancia de conocer las semillas forestales, las cuales cumplen funciones muy importantes dentro de la ecología y el equilibrio de los bosques, selvas, sabanas y demás ecosistemas, y por supuesto, las diversas propiedades que cada uno tiene y la belleza que nos regalan 🌳🌲🌴.

Although the conversation was mainly focused on the cultivation and production of seeds that provide us with food, the importance of knowing about forest seeds was also discussed, as they perform very important functions within the ecology and balance of forests, jungles, savannas and other ecosystems, and of course, the diverse properties that each one has and the beauty they give us 🌳🌲🌴.

Venezuela tiene una variedad increíble de especies forestales y es importante conocerlas, protegerlas, saber identificarlas y sembrarlas en espacios adecuados que permitan su crecimiento saludable, y a la vez, que se pueda aprovechar su sombra, frutos, oxígeno, etc. Una ciudad con árboles siempre será una ciudad más amigable, hermosa y fresca.

Venezuela has an incredible variety of forest species, and it's important to understand them, protect them, identify them, and plant them in suitable spaces that allow for their healthy growth, while also taking advantage of their shade, fruits, oxygen, and more. A city with trees will always be a friendlier, more beautiful, and fresher city.

Entre las semillas que estaban en exposición no podían faltar las de algunos de los rubros más populares y de mayor consumo en Venezuela y que se cultivan en nuestro municipio como cilantro, caraotas negras, maíz, lechoza (papaya), café y ají dulce.

Among the seeds on display were some of the most popular and widely consumed crops in Venezuela and that are grown in our municipality, such as coriander, black beans, corn, papaya, coffee, and sweet peppers.

Después del conversatorio, donde participaron tanto personas dedicadas a la agricultura como estudiantes de secundaria y representantes de otros movimientos ecológicos y sociales, llegó el momento más esperado, el del intercambio de semillas. Si bien había personas que están dedicadas a la actividad de la siembra y llevaron sus semillas para intercambiarlas con otros agricultores y movimientos campesinos, el resto de los que estábamos ahí recibimos algunas como obsequio.

After the discussion, which included participants from farmers, high school students, and representatives of other ecological and social movements, the most anticipated moment arrived: the seed exchange. While some people dedicated to planting brought their seeds to exchange with other farmers and peasant movements, the rest of us present received some seeds as gifts.

Me vine a casa con semillas de lechuga, acelga, café, maní y tapirama, un grano que no conocía, el señor que me regaló los granos de tapirama me dijo que crece en maceta, produce todo el año y es un alimento rico en proteínas, así que sembraré a ver que tal / I came home with seeds of lettuce, chard, coffee, peanuts and tapirama, a grain that I didn't know. The man who gave me the tapirama grains told me that it grows in a pot, produces all year round and is a food rich in protein, so I will plant it to see how it goes

Me regalaron varias semillas y yo estaba feliz 🌾😃. Vivo en apartamento pero como tengo un balcón inmenso pues está lleno de macetas con variedad de plantas jejeje, obviamente que no puedo sembrar muchas cosas porque la mayoría requieren de espacio, pero eso no me impide poder tener un pequeño huerto, aunque sea en macetas jajaja. Mis abuelos se dedicaban a la agricultura y la cría de gallinas, cabras y ovejas, así que siempre me ha gustado el campo 😁.

They gave me several seeds, and I was happy 🌾😃. I live in an apartment, but since I have a huge balcony, it's full of pots with a variety of plants, haha. Obviously, I can't plant many things because most of them require space, but that doesn't stop me from having a small garden, even if it's in pots, haha. My grandparents were farmers and raised chickens, goats, and sheep, so I've always loved the countryside.

Después que terminó el evento dí unas vueltas alrededor del edificio donde estábamos para ver parte de los cultivos y las áreas más cercanas. El día estaba fresco y nublado así que aproveché de hacer algunas fotos. Mi hermana me estaba esperando para irnos, ya ella había inspeccionado y fotografiado toda la escuela mientras yo estuve adentro jajaja.

After the event ended, I walked around the building where we were to see some of the crops and the surrounding areas. The day was cool and cloudy, so I took advantage of the opportunity to take some photos. My sister was waiting for me to leave; she'd already inspected and photographed the entire school while I was inside, haha.

Es importante valorar el trabajo que hacen los agricultores, ya que con dedicación y mucho amor siembran cada semilla y le dan los cuidados correspondientes para después poder recoger la cosecha que se convertirá en comida para toda la población. Es increíble ver lo poco apreciado que es su trabajo dentro de la sociedad en comparación con otras profesiones y oficios, las personas que cultivan los alimentos que luego consumimos definitivamente no reciben ni el reconocimiento ni la retribución que realmente merecen por esa labor tan importante, pero eso es un tema para otra publicación.

It's important to value the work farmers do. With dedication and love, they plant each seed and care for it, then harvest the crops that will become food for the entire population. It's incredible to see how little their work is appreciated in society compared to other professions and trades. The people who grow the food we later consume definitely don't receive the recognition or compensation they truly deserve for such important work, but that's a topic for another post.

Cuidar y preservar nuestras semillas locales y autóctonas, con esas características que las hacen únicas, no es solamente un acto ecológico y de amor sino también un acto de resistencia ante los agrotóxicos y la modificación genética que buscan acabar con la soberanía de lo natural y lo ancestral.
