The Things One Hears

The last 48 hours have been most interesting. And by interesting I probably mean all sorts of words, exhilarating, enjoyable, and and exhausting all spring to mind.

Anyway, alliteration aside, the past couple days have been just packed full of living. To start with, I put in another twelve hour shift at the bakery on Friday, so when I woke up bright and early Saturday morning to get ready to go with the hubs and the boy to the CDA ATA shoot, well, let's just say I was a bit on the potato side.

The starch wore off though as I watched my boy dominate the shoot. He shot his first 75 straight in trap and won the Jr's Singles part of the meet. He continues to amaze me daily with his prowess in the sport that is skeet and trap.

Yesterday, was also a bit of bittersweet day too. The boy's trusty shotgun, the SKB of awesomeness came up with it's first issue. The top barrel firing pen is sticking. Now, he treats his shotgun better than anything he owns. It is always carefully cleaned and stored, but after over 100K rounds, the beast is getting tired and needs a bit of an overhaul.

I was hoping it would make it to his 18th birthday this November as we wanted to surprise him with a new awesome skeet and trap gun, but it looks like his birthday is going to come early.

It's definitely a good thing I have been working all those extra hours, because holy pocket book lightening are skeet and trap guns expensive. Ouch.

But, he works so hard and never complains, so a new firearm is in his future. He just gets to know about it and not be surprised. His goal is to shoot in a NCAA shotgun program, and in order to get there he has to have the proper equipment, so here comes another SKB or Browning Cittori perhaps.

Thankfully, his coach let him use her Beretta to finish out the competition today. I have yet to hear how he is doing as I had to run the bakery solo today, which leads me to the hearing part of this missive.

This morning, as I was egg washing the croissants I found myself enjoying the rare solo bakery running session. There is something so therapeutic about being in a bakery alone. The smell of cinnamon roll dough proofing flitting through your nostrils as you glaze a Danish is pretty great.

When I am baking early morning, the only people around are janitorial and landscape workers. So, other than the occasional vacuum firing up, the park is super serene in the early AM hours.

I had just dusted the almond croissants with powdered sugar when a women clad in a grey Security polo poked her head into the bakery. She had the most bemused and slightly annoyed look on her face as she blurted,

"Um, just so you know, a marmot got in here. Don't worry, it's not a rat, it just looks like one. If you see it, call Dispatch"

And before I even acknowledged her message, she was gone.

Me, I was amused. Nature always has a way of upending things.

I don't know if the marmot was ever captured. It was definitely not a normal turn of events.

Which makes me wonder just what tomorrow will bring...

And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's white icing encrusted and not at all enticing due to it iPhone.

Wow, you sure know how to pack life full of...well, life! If I get to the theme park this summer, a trip to the bakery will be on my agenda for sure. And I love the early birthday present. That kid deserves it for sure.
