Before starting the journey with which I would finally fulfill my dream of traveling, I had to carry out detailed planning in order to achieve peace of mind. This trip would be different from the others, since this time I had to travel as a guest, paying for my accommodation day by day, in addition to other matters such as food and outings. I am a very obsessive person when it comes to spreadsheets and budgets, so doing this kept me quite entertained until the day to finally make it happen arrived 😃.
Antes de empezar el viaje con el que finalmente completaría mi sueño viajero, tuve que hacer una planificación detallada con el objetivo de lograr mi paz mental. Este viaje sería diferente a los demás, ya que esta vez tenía que viajar como huésped, pagando día por día mi alojamiento, además de otras cuestiones como comida y paseos. Yo soy una persona muy obsesiva con los excels y con los presupuestos, así que hacer esto me entretuvo bastante, hasta que finalmente llegó el día de concretarlo 😃.
In order to afford this trip, I had to take some money from my savings wallet and some more from real life. The good thing about making an Excel sheet counting the days I would spend in each place was that it allowed me to know the costs in advance. Since I prepared this trip more than a month ahead of time, I also had time to call several accommodations to find the best rates. What I didn’t like so much at first was that I couldn’t find hostels, but the hotels were still reasonably priced.
Para poder costear este viaje, tuve que sacar un poco de mis ahorros de billetera savings y otros tantos de la vida real. Lo bueno que tuvo hacer un excel contando los días que estaría en cada lugar fue que esto me permitió saber los costos de antemano. Como este viaje lo preparé con más de un mes de anticipación, también tuve tiempo de llamar a varios alojamientos para encontrar las mejores tarifas. Lo que no me gustó tanto al principio fue que no conseguí hosteles, pero los hoteles igualmente estaban a buen precio.
I don’t like hotels very much because I prefer to save some money by cooking my own food, but on this trip I had to adapt to that. Since my goal was to visit the provinces of Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Corrientes, and Formosa, and these are not among the most touristic ones, things were relatively inexpensive. Luckily, I always found an affordable food place nearby, which allowed me to stretch my budget even further. Out of the three hotels I stayed at, one offered half board, so dinner was included in my stay rate.
Los hoteles no me gustan mucho porque me gusta ahorrar un poco de dinero cocinando mi propia comida, pero en este viaje tuve que amoldarme a esto. Como mi objetivo era visitar las provincias de Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Corrientes y Formosa, y estas no son de las más turísticas, las cosas eran relativamente baratas. Por suerte, siempre encontré un local de comida accesible cerca y esto me permitió estirar aún más mi presupuesto. De los tres hoteles que visité, uno tenía media pensión así que tuve la cena incluida en la tarifa de mi estadía.
During my first stop in Santiago del Estero, my plan worked out even better than the budget I had estimated. In total, I stayed two nights at a hotel that cost me 21,000 ARS per night (around $17). This included a private room with a bathroom, breakfast, dinner, and access to the thermal water pool. For lunch, there was a place near the hotel that sold cheap tarts and empanadas, as well as a supermarket where I was able to buy fruit and cookies for the afternoon. Including the ticket for the city tour on the double-decker bus, for which I paid 10,000 ARS (around $8), I spent a total of 80,000 ARS (around $65) during those days—slightly less than the $100 I had originally planned.
Durante mi primera parada en Santiago del Estero, mi plan se adecuó incluso mejor que el presupuesto que había estimado. En total, me quedé dos noches en un hotel que me costó 21.000 ARS por noche ($17 aprox). Esto incluía habitación privada con baño, desayuno, cena y acceso a la pileta con agua termal. Para comer al mediodía, había un local cerca del hotel que vendía tartas y empanadas baratas, además de un supermercado en donde pude comprar frutas y galletitas para la tarde. Incluyendo el ticket para el City Tour en el bus de doble piso, por el cual pagué 10000 ARS ($8 aprox), en esos días gasté un total de 80000 ARS ($65). Algo menos que los $100 que tenía pensados.
Another idea I picked up from travelers’ forums was taking overnight buses to move from one place to another, which allowed you to save on a night of accommodation. That’s exactly what I did when I had to move from Termas de Río Hondo, in Santiago del Estero, to Resistencia, Chaco. I chose a bus that departed at 9 PM and arrived at 7 AM the next day, after covering the 700 km that separate both destinations. I paid around 35,000 ARS (about $30) for this ticket, so it was great to be able to sleep on the bus and arrive early to make the most of the new city that was waiting for me.
Otra idea que tomé de los foros de los viajeros fue lo de tomar buses nocturnos para ir de un lado a otro, lo que te permitía ahorrarte una noche de alojamiento. Eso fue exactamente lo que hice cuando tuve que mudarme de Termas de Rio Hondo, Santiago del Estero, hasta Resistencia, Chaco. Elegí un bus que partía a las 9 PM y llegaba a las 7 AM del día siguiente, después de recorrer los 700 km que separan ambos destinos. Por este ticket pagué unos 35000 ARS ($30), por lo que fue bueno poder dormir en él y llegar temprano para poder aprovechar la nueva ciudad que me esperaba.
During my third afternoon in the city of Termas de Río Hondo, I asked the hotel owner for permission to leave my luggage and walk around the area a bit more. Fortunately, the owner was very kind and let me store my backpack during the day, so I spent time walking with my friend Carina almost until it was time to catch the bus. When I left Termas, I couldn’t leave without placing my Worldmappin sticker, and unintentionally—but intentionally—I found the perfect spot for it. I admit I felt a bit embarrassed sticking it on because there were a lot of people passing by and watching, but in the end I dared to do it and managed to take a nice souvenir photo.
Durante mi tercer tarde en la ciudad de Termas de Río Hondo, pedí permiso al dueño del hotel para dejar mi equipaje y poder caminar un poco más por los alrededores. Afortunadamente, el dueño era muy amable y me dejó guardar mi mochila durante el día, así que estuve caminando con mi amiga Carina casi hasta la hora de salida del micro. Cuando me fui de Termas, no podía no dejar mi sticker de Worldmappin, y sin quererlo, pero queriendo, encontré el lugar perfecto para él. Admito que me daba un poco de vergüenza pegarlo porque había mucha gente pasando y mirando, pero finalmente me atreví y pude sacarme una buena foto de recuerdo.
In the end, my stay in the city of Termas de Río Hondo was not as expensive as I had planned, and it was great to be able to enjoy it to the fullest. This was the first time I traveled alone as a guest, paying for my accommodation like any other tourist, without having to work at the place to justify my stay. I felt it as a step up to the next level in my travel experience, and it was great that it turned out that way. I thanked my past self for having those savings that allowed me to do amazing things; they made me want to keep saving little by little so I could do something big later on ❤️.
Al fin de cuentas, mi estadía en la ciudad de Termas de Río Hondo no fue tan costosa como había planificado, y fue genial poder disfrutar de ella al máximo. Esta fue la primera vez que viajé sola como huésped, pagando por mi alojamiento como cualquier turista, y sin tener que trabajar en el lugar para justificar mi estadía. Yo lo sentí como un salto al siguiente nivel en mi experiencia de viajera, y fue genial que así haya sido. Agradecí a mi yo del pasado por haber tenido esos ahorros que me permitieron hacer cosas geniales: me dieron ganas de seguir ahorrando de a poco para poder hacer algo grande luego ❤️.
