Ghost Stories of Off-World (World Building Notes)

in Worldbuilding10 months ago (edited)

There was a prompt written into the World Building Community, which asks us to write about Ghost Stories in our world, and I thought it would be a cool one to join in on and think about.

Here's A Link To The Post If You'd Like To Check It Out.

Ghost Stories

Ghost stories, and tall tales in general have been a part of our society for as far back as the first Humans put together sentences. They can be used to portray some sort of lesson, or warning - especially to younger generations from older ones - and, while stories alone can be used in this sense, songs, poems, and even pictures can be utilised to give messages to the future.

With this in mind, I think it would be great to be able to add some of these types of stories into the world I've been creating.

Racreef's Find

Racreef was a Beskin, who always fancied himself a star jumper, and the only thing that he was missing was a ship. He found it easy to come by money, but he was also bad with his finances and gave into get-rich-quick schemes, instead of putting his mind to it and focusing his wealth on good ideas; Racreef wanted to find the path of least resistance.

One day, while hanging out in a port on Schoosha, he got speaking with a worn-out star jumper. The jumper spent long enough in deep space to lose his mind, but with enough drink into him, Racreef took heed of what the man was saying and filled their cups, to keep him talking.

"An empty star cruiser has been spotted many times out there. It comes from Uncharted Space, and wanders the Outer Worlds, before disappearing once more." The man started to say, before self-censoring himself. After some encouragement, he took a breath and started once more.

"Scans found nothing, and all attempts to hail it were met with a silent response. The transmissions were accepted, and all replies back were filled with silence - it wasn't static either - it was like someone was there, but kept their mouth shut."

"Some of the other Spacers say that ships have a mind of their own and that one is on the search for her old captain. The Deep Spacers though, have some answers that make my skin crawl. Some ancient horror from Uncharted Space took charge of the ship, and is waiting for someone to come aboard - for what? - I have no idea."

Any normal person would steer clear, but the thought of a large cruiser laying dormant was too tempting to chase down.

"I'll go after the ship," Racreef stated. "Only problem is, I don't have my own ship."

"Don't worry, I can sell you a small one manner, it's reliable, and fast, but hasn't got much in regards to weaponry."

He bought the ship, without inspecting it, and once he started his search he noticed that it wasn't as reliable as initially expected. Knowing nothing about ships, he wouldn't have been able to know what to look out for even if he did check it before handing over money.

His search was filled with issues, and soon the ship gave up altogether, leaving him floating through space cursing the name of the Deep Spacer who ripped him off.

Love it ! It has vibes of Dawson's Christian (one of my favourite filk songs - lots of people have covered it, but I like the Vixy & Tony version the best.)

Oh deadly, I'll be sure to check that out. Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
