Today I visited the Food Place food court, located at Pavilion Mall. The food court is located beside the Oriental Kopi Restaurant.

This time I ordered Muar Otak Otak fried rice from Xia Yuan Yuan stall, it cost RM19.90 per plate.

"Xia Yuan Yuan" roughly translates to “Shrimp Balls Round Round,” reflecting their specialisation in handmade shrimp balls and other homestyle Chinese comfort foods.

My Fried rice is made with fragrant long-grain rice, tossed with egg, chopped scallions, and savoury bits of Muar-style otak-otak (spiced fish paste). On the fried rice is a side of sunny-side-up egg with a golden yolk. Besides, my fried rice has fresh cucumber slices.

Otak-otak is a Southeast Asian delicacy made from ground fish (usually mackerel), mixed with coconut milk, chili, turmeric, lemongrass, and other spices, then wrapped in banana leaves and grilled or steamed. Muar, a town in Johor, Malaysia, is renowned for producing one of the most iconic versions of otak-otak. Muar’s version is thinner, spicier, and more aromatic than others, making it a regional favourite. Incorporating this into fried rice adds a punchy, flavorful twist to a simple dish.
