Bologna Bound: A Day Trip Filled with Flavor, Finds, and Footsteps

One of the longer drives during our Italian vacation took us to the city of Bologna, and with that came a small debate: drive or train? We ultimately chose to drive so we could move at our own pace, set our own schedule, and have the freedom to explore the city on our own terms. Bologna had been on our radar thanks to a documentary we watched while planning our trip—it highlighted the city’s deep culinary roots and its charming local vibe. That was enough to convince us it was worth a visit.

We arrived on a Saturday, which also happened to be flea market day, and that became our starting point. The markets were buzzing with locals and travelers alike. Wandering through stalls filled with everything from antiques to odd collectibles to vintage fashion was a treat, especially with the beautiful buildings and porticoes of Bologna as the backdrop.

From there, it was time to dive into one of the main reasons we came—food. Our first culinary stop was a tiny gem known as Mortadella Lab. This unassuming deli, practically a hole in the wall, ended up serving what I can confidently say was the best sandwich I had all vacation. Simple, no frills, but packed with flavor—Italy has a way of turning even the most casual bites into unforgettable meals.

Recharged and full, we made our way to Piazza Maggiore, Bologna’s central square. The area is rich with landmarks: the Duomo, the Fountain of Neptune, and a local museum that adds historical weight to the space. It was a great spot to just sit, admire the architecture, and soak in the atmosphere before venturing off again.

Next up was a bit of street food sampling, including something I was curious to try: fried pasta. While unique, I’ll admit I much prefer traditional pasta—especially when you’re in a country that does it better than anywhere else.

One unexpected but welcome discovery was a Starbucks nearby. Normally, that might seem too familiar for a trip abroad, but at this point in the day, our feet were screaming for a break. It ended up being a nice, quiet pit stop before our last walk of the day.

Our final destination was the famous Two Towers of Bologna. I had no idea that Bologna has its own leaning tower, and while it doesn’t quite rival the one in Pisa, it was still a cool find and a nice way to close out the visit.

Looking back, Bologna was a solid experience—good food, lively markets, and a walkable historic core. It didn’t quite capture us like some of the other cities on this trip, but it added variety and a unique flavor to the journey. And that sandwich? Still thinking about it.
