It’s election day in one of the states in my country, yet instead of being a celebration of democracy, we’re witnessing killings, violence, intimidation and disruptions of the electoral process.

A country that claims to practice democracy, yet citizens fear for their lives simply for exercising their rights.

Is democracy truly democracy when people have to risk their lives to participate in it?
In your country, do elections truly give people a voice, or have elections become a battle for power as well?

That's so bad because how on earth do we choose our leaders when we are not allowed to really do that?

Do they rig elections over there too or at what point does the process get altered to lose your trust

I wouldn't say elections are completely meaningless. They can still give citizens power. But when violence, intimidation and manipulation enter the process, that power becomes severely weakened.

Exactly the point. Democracy is compromised already cos people who go out to vote do that based on risk that anything may happen at poling units

Elections can give people a voice, but only when institutions protect that voice. Otherwise, voting becomes a ritual we perform while those with power decide the real outcome.

I remember the last election where devices were tampered with and results were not uploaded the right way. With officials taken to courts as witnesses or something. Like it's so seriously bad

Currently, election isn't giving people voice because the government has failed the people by not providing fear and credible election. They pay thug to chase the people away and won't allow the police and media authority to do the necessary during election day...

The external body we have is INEC and they are not doing their jobs. International body only have limits.

A war in the space of exercising our rights as citizens. I even learned that the police opened tear gas at voters at a polling unit.

Democracy you say😅😅 there's nothing like that. Our political system is gone. I always stay away from elections because I know that there most be something Wrong one way or the other..
