The Cluttered Footwear

in The MINIMALIST7 months ago (edited)

When I was growing up, one major thing I knew about my dad was how cleanly he kept his bedroom. It was their bedroom (mom and dad), but he took more responsibility for keeping it clean and organized. He didn't like any of us, his children, to come and litter the room with anything. His books were never seen on his desk; he put them inside the drawer immediately after reading. Even if we mistakenly left the broom that was supposed to be at the back of the door exposed to sight, he would lambast us for that.

We adopted such a lifestyle to the best of our capacity, but it couldn't be compared to the way he did things.

Some months back, I had the opportunity to visit my immediate elder sister, who lives far away in another state. When I got there, I met a totally different person than the one I knew back at home because we adopted the trait of decluttering at home. For her, the home was a bit organized, but some parts were totally off, and what annoyed me the most was her footwear.

I've seen ladies having all manner of footwear stacked up somewhere, and they don't use them. Some of them get used just once a year or every two years. My sister's case is different; she has a lot of footwear and she wears all, and she lacks a proper way of organizing them. She would leave them scattered all over the place, especially at the entrance of the house.

On my first day there, I hated how these footwear were scattered all over the place, to the extent that I began looking for my sandal I went there with. I took it upon myself to start arranging them, keeping the ones I felt she's not going to use to a deeper corner. But when she came around, she began sweating out looking for her shoes and not bothering to ask me, even though most of them were not scattered as she usually used them. She never thought I would be responsible. She searched, and when the searching got on her nerves, she finally asked me, and I had to point to the corner where I kept them. And guess what she said?

She muttered, "Why did you pack them to that side? Don't you know I make use of them, that's why I have them easily around?"

I was totally surprised; not even my expected 'thank you' was said. And I had to challenge her back, "You have your shoes littered everywhere. I tried organizing them to a corner, and that's all I get. With the way they're scattered, how do you know that people are not stealing them?"

She was calm a bit, uttering again, "I'm not saying you did bad, but I have my reasons for having them around. At least you could have informed me immediately I came back, or don't you see how sweaty I am searching for these shoes?"

"Okay, sorry," I apologized to let peace reign.

Some people are naturally like that; they don't care if things are organized. All they want is to be able to reach them the moment they need them.

Thank You!
