Breakfast in a Famous Kopi Tiam

Hello, friends especially foodies!

Still in our last vacation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we came to the area well known as Chinatown. In one of the street you could take some photos there with the murals for free. Here were some of our photos there…

Not far from that street, there was a famous kopi tiam which has been operating since 1956, its’ name Ho Kow Hainam Kopi Tiam.

When we arrived there it was 9.20 am but the place was almost full. Some customers before us queued up to be seated.

Lucky for us, we got a table without waiting. Here was the left part of the dining area which they had. It had the opening concept of dinning area and everyone there seemed enjoying their breakfast.

When we were at our table, a waiter came and gave us the menu and a QR code then tell us to scan in to order online. The menu they had looked like a newspaper. Here how the front of it

Inside, you could see that they had Cham for the most favorite drink, then they had coffee, coffee-c, coffee-O, tea, tea-C, tea-O, Nescafé, Milo, Neslo, plain water, Chinese tea, and canned drink.

For summer pick, they had honey lemon, lemon Ceylon, kumquats Chenpi, and Malacca sugar black soy milk.

On next page, they showed their signature lemak rice, with various chicken like fried chicken, chicken curry, chicken rendang and red cooked chicken. You could see that they also showed colorful pictures of these menu.

Next, they had Malaysia’s Classic Noodle such as Tiger prawn curry noodle, chicken drumstick curry noodle, dried chicken curry noodle/meehon/kuey teow, chicken & prawn horfun soup, lorong panggung prawn noodle, and traditional mee siam.

They also had signature hainam series with chicken chop or chicken drumstick, chee cheong fun, some breakfast menu like fried Meehon, traditional lemak rice only, chicken porridge, and signature yamcake.

And they had British breakfast like butter & kaya croissant, turkey ham & egg croissant, scramble egg croissant, and curry mayo scramble egg ham cheese croissant.
In bread & egg category; they had kind of steamed bread such as butter & kaya steamed bread, kaya steamed bread, and chicken curry steamed bread; and they had half boiled egg too.
For toast, they had butter & kaya toast, kaya toast, half boiled egg on plain toast, curry banjir half boiled egg toast, and chicken curry toast.

Well, for dimsum, they had steamed glutinous rice, colorful roll, tobiko flower, jade shrimp, jade chicken ham roll, and cheese beancurd. They also had two kind of cake, classic pandan layer and yam layer cake.

Here were what we ordered online that day, as you could see we ordered fried chicken lemak rice, butter & kaya toast, half boiled egg, jade shrimp and iced Cham.

The first thing that was delivered to our table was their most popular drink, ICED CHAM.

It was actually a perfect mixture of tea, milk, and coffee in a drink. The taste of it was vary, you could taste the authentic flavor of tea with the good smell, coffee which gave a bit bitter flavor, the taste and aroma of coffee plus milk. It had medium sweetness with a bit coffee bitter. A good combination of flavor and aroma, no wonder it is a BEST SELLER.

Next, the only dimsum we ordered came too. It is what they called JADE SHRIMP.

Actually it was the shrimp steamed shewmay with a shrimp on each top wrapped with pretty green jade color of skin. The taste of it was savory and a bit sweet with smooth tasty shrimp meat as its’ main ingredient. And to complete the flavor, it came with the chili sauce with brought sweet and spicy flavor. Perfect!

After the dimsum came, then our order of half boiled egg and butter & kaya toast also arrived.

And not a long time, the lemak rice also came, let’s find out about them too..

My husband opened the half boiled egg on a small plate then put the soy sauce in it while me, I cracked a bit of the egg to make a hole then ate it right away from the hole. The egg tasted so fresh and excellent.

Next, we had the best BUTTER & KAYA TOAST ever.

The toast baked on the right temperature and in a right time, so no wonder it was crispy but still soft too. Inside was butter and kaya jam. The butter gave savory flavor while the kaya gave sweet (but not too sweet) flavor. And guess what, we loved it.

Last menu was FRIED CHICKEN LEMAK RICE.

This lemak rice served with fried chicken, dried salted fish and peanut, half of egg with separated chili paste as we ordered. I couldn’t feel any spices in this rice and it had non thick texture. The chicken had light flavor of savory, the salted fish and peanuts were crispy and savory, plus the chili paste had a bit spicy and savory flavor. Overall my husband and I agreed that this lemak rice tasted just so so and nothing special on it.

But they had great Cham, jade shrimp, butter and kaya toast plus half boiled egg. So, why don’t you try them by yourselves?
