Gyumono Japanese BBQ & Sushi

in Eating Out7 days ago

Hi there. In this post, I cover Gyumono Japanese BBQ and sushi. This is located east of Toronto. I went here to celebrate an early birthday.

About The Place

Gyumono is a Yakiniku restaurant that offers All You Can Eat (AYCE) options with a smokeless Japanese BBQ on the table.

I do recommend to make a reservation. It turned out that it was busy at 5:30PM on a Sunday evening.

Some of their dishes include:

  • Salmon Tataki
  • Sashimi-Hookigai
  • Torch Wagyu Aburi Sushi
  • Torch Eel Aburi Sushi
  • Chicken Karrage
  • Prime Kalbi Meat
  • Sweet Soy Short Rib Strips
  • Marinated Lamb
  • Kalbi Short Rib

Pictures & Food

When it came to ordering, you have to scan a QR code to access the menu. Whatever you order goes to your table. There is a two hour dining limit. The last call is when there are 20 minutes left. Order everything you can before you have 20 minutes left. Anything you don't finish is charged. (This is to prevent food waste.)

Note that the menu from their website is different than the menu when you visit there. I think there are more items on the menu compared to the website.

Here is what we ordered. There was a lot and it was to hard to tell which was which.

What We Liked

The fried squid was very good. If you like fried squid from Chinese dimsum, there is a good chance you would like these ones.

The rectangular Torch Oshi Sushi were very good in texture and taste. Highly recommended.

From the meats, the Kalbi Short ribs were good. The Prime Kalbi, chicken wings and marinated steak were great as well.

There is one fried item called something like Fried Hanger Steak. At first, I thought it was fried fish. This thing was really good. It tasted like fried squid in a way.

Desserts were really good. As I was doing portion control, I only had a few tastes of dessert. The Green Tea Matcha with Red Bean Pudding were good. Mango Pudding was super good. The portions were small as they were in small glasses. That did not stop us from having more until we ran out of time.

The Not So Good Stuff

When it came to scanning the QR code, it was on the wall on one side of the table. The QR code was opposite to me so it was a little tricky to scan the QR code.

The fries were okay. However, they were similar to fries from Costco. Nothing too amazing.

With the Torch Wagyu Beef sushi, the meat slice is very thin. You don't taste much meat but the sauce is good. There is a fair bit of rice in which it fills you up if you have a lot.

Legroom at the table was okay for me. I am not six feet tall. Taller people may have issues with legroom as the bottom of the grill is in the way.

You do have to be careful with the flame on the grill. You can manually change the flame level but if you go too high you can burn your food and have a lot of flames flare up. A table near us had some of incident where there was burnt food and needed a grill change.

Green tea was served in a non-ceramic cup. You have to be careful as it is hot on the outside. It was a dollar per person compared to tea fees of at least 2.50 CAD per person at Chinese dimsum in the Toronto area.

Sometimes the food coming to you can take a bit of time. It was a busy time so the kitchen must have had lots of orders to deal with. I think service and experience would be a little better if we came when it was not busy.

The place was kind of big and it looked it can seat 200 people. However, the men's washroom was not big. Two urinals with one not working and 1 toilet.

Desserts were very good but portions were small. Only the ice cream was a decent size as it was prepackaged.

Closing Notes

It made sense for us to make a first visit and choose Gyumono. They had a lot of good Google reviews with an average of like 4.7 out of 5 with 1172 reviews. It seemed like a safe choice.

For me, the food overall was okay with texture and taste. There are some not so great dishes but there are some good unique options on their menu. I did not have too much dessert but the rest of family really liked it. They ordered as much as they could before the last call.

There is a chance I may visit this place again. It would be only if it was at a less busy time. Plus I would have to watch how much I eat.
