Although the sign still says Fusciello's Butcher & Deli, upon entering the space I was pleasantly surprised by a new owner that has moved in to this Route 9 establishment in Forked River, New Jersey. Presenting the public with a soft opening, Deleoni's Italian Deli is preparing for a big celebration in June complete with a new sign change. Joe, the owner, seems very excited to show the public now as to what to expect with this reimagining of his family recipes and creative take on his sandwiches, sides, appetizers and salads.

Upon walking into the deli, it felt like being welcomed by family. While growing up in the Bronx, I definitely experienced the Italian family dynamic. "The Godfather" was playing on their giant screen, but as one of the employees told me, they turn off the Rated R parts when children are present. Family and friends kept showing up to wish Joe well with his new adventure while we were there.

Lori, my better half, and I sat down at one of the tables after ordering to try their cuisine out for the first time. Lori ordered the Sicilian Rice Ball sans bread and I could tell by her smile that she couldn't put the fork down. It looked delicious but I was too busy enjoying my PaPa D sandwich on Italian Bread. This tasty delight included breaded chicken cutlets, prosciutto, capicola, hot soppressata, roasted peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and provolone. When I tell you they pile the ingredients on, they pile it on. Joe's wife told me he believes in "going big or going home!" Also, try out their potato salad. It was nothing like anything I ever tasted before. It was very creamy and delicious with some special added ingredients.

I will probably be there a few more times before their big grand opening celebration. I urge anyone who is in the area to stop in and say hello to Joe and get a taste of food prepared with love! Check their facebook page out while online but nothing beats going in person and picking up some of their meats, sandwiches or homemade Brooklyn Bread. It's like taking the Q Train to Brighton Beach!
