Labor Day for the year 2024 is celebrated or observed on Monday, September 2nd, in the United States. The day celebrates the American labor movement and the contributions and achievements of the American worker. The importance of laborers in the development and advancement of the world cannot be overemphasized. Laborers play a crucial role in the world and have a significant impact on various aspects of society and the economy. These are some vital roles laborers have contributed to world growth, like economic growth, infrastructure development, social welfare, job creation, technological advancement, community development, advocacy for worker rights, and many more.
Sometimes, many people overlook the importance of laborers in our society. It makes me laugh when the thought of AI taking over the jobs of many people becomes possible in the future. Well, there are things machines can't do today with the right programming, but there are some jobs that, no matter the programming, machines won't be able to do properly, and that's my belief.
Laborers impact my country and its current development.

Nigeria has a diverse labor force that contributes to various sectors of our economy. Let me provide you with some information about laborers in Nigeria.
In Nigeria, laborers are involved in a wide range of industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, services, and more. Many laborers work in the informal sector, which comprises self-employment and small-scale businesses. This sector plays a significant role in providing employment opportunities, particularly in urban areas. Laborers in the public sector have been clamoring for an increase in wages for a while now, but there has been little increase over the years due to the economic difficulties faced by all the citizens of the country.
As of May 2021, the minimum wage in Nigeria stands at 30,000 Naira per month. This wage was increased from the previous amount of 18,000 Naira in 2019, following the approval of the Nigerian government.
However, it is worth noting that the implementation and enforcement of the minimum wage can vary across different sectors and states within Nigeria. Some sectors, such as the public sector, tend to adhere more strictly to the minimum wage guidelines, while others may struggle to fully implement them.
The issue of the minimum wage in Nigeria often sparks debates and discussions regarding the standard of living and the cost of living in the country. Many argue that the current minimum wage is not sufficient to meet the basic needs of individuals and their families, considering the rising cost of goods and services. This has led to calls for further increases to the minimum wage in order to improve the well-being of laborers. This often leads to strikes and protests in most communities. Each state in Nigeria can determine the minimum wage it will pay its laborers, and this is where the joint advocate of laborers comes in.
As of today, the lawmakers are canvassing for a 100,000-naira minimum wage for Nigerian workers. The minister of information and national orientation, "Idris Mohammed," said in an interview with Punch News that the 30,000-naira minimum wage will end on the last day of March 2024.
It is said that the governor of Edo State has increased the state minimum wage to 70,000 naira from the previous 30,000 naira. Other states, like Lagos State, have also emulated this change, and many Nigerians hope it will be a change that spreads across all states in Nigeria.
It's going to be great if such an event happens. Laborers will be happy to work and meet their financial needs. Happy Laborers/Workers Day, everyone, and Happy New Month to you all.
