Pests are a problem for the horticulturist, but they are part of nature and we must learn to live with them. It is a mistake to try to eliminate them completely with products that in the long term will be much more harmful to us, causing serious illnesses. In this series of articles I will talk about how to deal with these small, undesirable living beings.

Ants are one of the most useful insects for humanity and the planet, but in certain circumstances they can be a harmful pest for the garden. And I dare say one of the worst, since it is very difficult to fight them.
The feeding habits of ants are the problem. And the fact is that ants use some of the garden pests such as aphids and scale insects as livestock. Not only do they help them to prosper, but they protect them from natural predators in the same way that a shepherd would do with his livestock.
There are some types of ants, the defoliating ones, that can be even more harmful. As we all know, it is very difficult to get rid of ants, so the best thing is to try to mitigate their number. There are many methods or products for this. From vinegar, cinnamon, garlic infusion, yeast, baking soda and many others. They are not one hundred percent effective but they will help us to prevent them from becoming a pest.
