Gastritis is a nightmare... particularly for senior citizens.
It is even more troubling when all his / her life, the stomach was never cared properly, hunger was consistent (for whatever reason - not fasting), and the result of body abuse out of stress had been a norm throughout decades.
But it isn't the end when there are proper nutritious "brews" from fresh food recipes can still be obtained—especially with the "Helper" doing most if the "hard labours"

Which is how we eventually landed the "Goldilocks" Recipe for mom
And with proper timing and not forgetting to take this "brew", it managed to greatly reduce mom's gastritis suffering.
But how did it all started?

We were first introduced with Millet, the "ultimate grain" that actually is not only good tackling gastritis, it is supposed to be good for diabetic as well.
But after a few rounds of millet pumpkin porridge, mom's stomach isn't taking it well because the stomach lining could have been badly inflamed and there could be bruises in the stomach, where even the softest porridge was a nightmare for her poor stomach.
(Don't worry, we actually have a scope appointment coming up, but because it is a government hospital, we have to wait a bit because we missed the window when we were out of town during Lunar New Year)
Actually for a normal person without gastric, this porridge is ideal for many, fully packed with nutrients and low in GI. Great for diabetic patients too because there is no added sugar
Not to mention it is fast to make too. In a short 30 minutes it is ready
The recipe, in case you are curious, this is what I made for my mom
- 1 cup of thinly sliced fresh pumpkin
- 30g of millet
- 1L of water
- 1 dried scallop
- mushroom seasoning for flavour
Put it to a boil with all the ingredients, and simmer with low fire for 30 minutes, and the millet will be nicely done
Don't forget to wash the millet first! You never know how much dust it has caught during packaging
So, looking at the porridge isn't really able to help mom, the doctor has suggested 2 hourly small portion of finely blended porridge / (thick) milk to help her to absorb better.

Off we went searching for the "perfect ratio for mom".
From more pumpkin to more Chinese Yam (which is popular for its "coating ability" with its slimy texture to heal the stomach lining), peanuts and walnuts, it took us multiple tries to find one that is suitable for her.

Recipe (2 persons portion):
60g millet
150g pumpkin
150g Chinese Yam
7 pieces of Chinese Dried Sugar-less Red Dates
30g Peanut
800g water
At first I tried this recipe from YouTube Shorts (or Tiktok depending from which platform), which is for 2 person, it was a little too much for mom. Though she loved it a lot, but her stomach wasn't happy even with 1 small bowl (150ml) diluted portion.

By the way, I just used whatever I had, the salted locally roasted peanuts from the Chinese New Year hampers gifted by my relative, and it significantly lowered further the sweetness of the red dates
Dad was having a field day enjoying it, because I added 1 drop of concentrated stevia zero-calorie sugar—because at his age, he is fanatic with sweet stuffs (like a kid) and this is the only way to keep him far from turning diabetes at the age of 83. 😅

And then, we finally realised that mom's stomach, that is so "whiny" because it must be really injured inside, I found another recipe that is more like a milk compared to a thick smooth baby food (from the previous recipe)

Using the "Soy Milk" function, it is a lot smoother, but not as thick as baby food.
With the tiny recipe that was sourced out:
- 25g pumpkin slice
- 25g Chinese Yam (Chinese Nagaimo / Dioscorea polystachya)
- 30g millet
- 15g walnut (or mix with walnut 2:1 peanut ratio)
- 4 sugar-less dried red dates
- 500ml water
This was the best recipe for her when she mixes this thick milk with hot water 1:1 ratio and have it every 2 hours to curb excessive acid reflux that is causing her bloated-ness, gastritis, back ache and headache as well.
But we still needed to continue with the recommended medication (that costs $30 USD per week or MYR120) just to keep the acid reflux at bay until we could see the doctor and get the stomach scope done to find out what is wrong.
So far I have tried it myself, sharing half of the "brewed" portion so that it is not too much for her, it has been pretty filling when I have it in the morning with a salad wrapped tortilla, and it does help me to curb most of my morning cravings (whenever I am not really at stress)
Moreover, this thick milk recipe is actually good for diabetic patients too, if there is no sugar added. Taking it as it is especially with just walnuts (without peanut) has pretty low calories (around 200 kcal per serving), not to mention it has lowering cholesterol capacity.
My cousin was concerned with the use of the Highspeed Blender (aka the Helper) it will increase the glucose level, so I took the opportunity to ask A.I to search through "recommendations" from the Chinese web, and this is what I got:
”破壁机制作养胃山药小米核桃粥适合糖尿病患者,但需控制食材量。建议用量:山药50克,小米30克,核桃10克,水适量。注意糖分摄入,最好在医生指导下食用。“
Translation:
A high-speed blender can be used to make a stomach-soothing yam, millet, and walnut porridge, suitable for diabetics, but the amount of ingredients needs to be controlled. Suggested quantities: 50g yam, 30g millet, 10g walnuts, and appropriate amount of water. Be mindful of sugar intake; it's best to consume this under the guidance of a doctor.
So rest assured (according to the explanation), the recipe I got, is relatively ”safe“ to consume daily as a meal (per cup) while staying active to make sure it is fully burn up as fuel.
Which is not using sugar, and have it sparingly with a mixture of healthy low-calorie greens
What do you think?
Would this be a great recipe for stomach and gut health for you?
I think using a hand mixer / blender could do the trick too but it will take longer. This highspeed blender so far is one of the best "investments" I have made for my mom
