Gone are those crazy days of having to steal just five more minutes under the fluffy duvet before jumping out of the warm, cosy bed. Into the shower, grab a coffee, and a quick bite before heading out to work and dealing with those frustrating traffic snarls.
Easing slowly into the day is the one luxury I feel we, as silvery folk, have earned. Yes, there are still times when we need to get moving earlier, but I do my best to make appointments so I only have to leave home after the traffic has calmed down.
I'm a night owl, and hubby often used to make our morning coffee. Waking up to my man so lovingly bringing me coffee in bed was such a treat, not just the coffee. It's that gentle touch nudging me awake when we have a busy day ahead, that special look meant just for me. Those are all the things I miss so much!
I have my coffee a little later now, or set my alarm when I need to get up earlier, and although I miss that togetherness, I still enjoy my early morning coffee in bed. I now chat more on my phone, enjoy hearing the sound of the birds in the tree outside my bedroom window, and look out at the garden. Those are priceless luxuries, but the missing never goes away!
All the crazy years of busyness have taught me how to slap a tasty meal together in no time.
While I'm not a breakfast person, there are times when I have to make something for friends or family staying over. An omelette is probably one of the quickest and easiest light breakfasts one can throw together, and something I do enjoy.
A regular guest, who, well into her fifties, is studying law, and stayed here while writing her exams. We've become good friends, so it's always a pleasure to spoil her a little in between her studies. A simple two-egg omelette with tomato, blobs of cottage cheese with spring onions, grated cheese, and fresh parsley, straight from my herb garden outside the kitchen, served with sourdough toast, was a satisfying light and leisurely meal.
I had a lazy weekend binge-watching TV series, she said she doesn't know why she's studying at her age, and envied me having time to do whatever I pleased.
She admitted that studying has become an addiction in her family. She already has a degree.
I think it's amazing that people do not let the silver years stop them from doing the things usually reserved for the younger generation.
I think we can all learn a lesson from that - never too old to tackle what seems impossible!
