When life gives you oranges

What can you do with a bit of wheat flour, sugar, baking powder, some eggs, oranges, oil, and yoghurt?

Yeah - an orange cake!! 🍊

Although I should have been practising the piano, as tomorrow is a busy day for me because of some projects I am working on, I promised that I would make a follow-up post and announce the result of the guessing game posted a few days ago. I thought the best way for that would be to mix it with a baking post, using oranges as one of the ingredients and reveal the weight of the picked oranges at the end of the post. So, if you just want to find out that part, you will scroll down through my post to the end... unless you want to see this easy recipe and its elaboration. Then stay with me while I am trying my best as a "chef". 😂

I found a recipe that suggested cutting into pieces 1 whole orange with peel and mixing it all together with 3 large eggs, 1 yoghurt, 1 cup of sunflower oil, 2 cups of sugar, 3 cups of wheat flour and 1 packet of baking powder.

However, I did a bit different version, ie all the measures in my recipe were "more or less" 😂. I chose one medium-sized orange and one tangerine, and in the end added an additional half of a smaller orange. Maybe it exceeds the original recipe, but let's try to improvise and add a super intense orange taste to this cake. I cut them into pieces, with the peel. As these fruits are free of chemicals, I know their peel is also safe and healthy. The quantity of eggs (3), yoghurt and baking powder is the same as in the recipe. All the rest... was measured by eye. 😁 I also added a packet of vanilla sugar, which was not in the recipe.

A hand mixer and a deep bowl are welcome to join this post. They did all the work, and I was there just to supervise the blending and mixing process. Make sure the pieces of orange peel are well blended; if not, continue to blend... or take those out that were stubborn and didn't want to fall under the knives of the mixer.

The next step is to pour the mixed dough into a baking pan. The recipe said to grease the pan, but again, I did it my way... I lined it with baking paper. I don't know why I chose it this way actually. Maybe to take it out easier when it is ready; however, I am not sure if this was the right way to do it.

In this moment, I suspected the dough was not thick enough. Anyway, it went to the oven. The recipe said to bake it for about 40 minutes at 170 degrees Celsius.

Right now, it is still in the baking process, although 50 60 minutes have passed since I placed it into the oven... Oh, I guess it is better for me just to play the piano and not be a chef. 😂

While waiting for the cake to be ready, let's see who was the closest in the guess about the weight of the picked oranges and tangerines. There were no additional hints, just this photo:

Those who wanted to play said:

@enraizar 12 kg
@livinguktaiwan 15kg
@avdesing 12 kg
@duskobgd 13 kg
@alonicus 16 kg
@nesbi94 10 kg
@mdrguez 20 kg

Later, I realised that these photos would be of help... for example, one orange is 500 grams, a few tangerines weigh 1 kilogram...

In total... we picked 36kg of oranges and tangerines!!! 😱 I hope you can see that number on the scale! It means @mdrguez was the closest in her guess, so I invite her to a piece of an orange cake that I just took out of the oven.

It is a very uneven, crooked, failed orange cake. Drunk, probably, without alcohol. So, I don't know whether she would like to try it, as I can't guarantee it is safe for consumption. 🤣 Instead, a small gift will land in her wallet. 😉

P.S. I should have baked it in a different pan (a shallow and wider one), and prepared it with one orange less, or with a bit more flour. However, its smell (and taste of a small piece I tried) is... like from an orange heaven! 🍊

Sort:

Not going to lie, its not the prettiest looking cake lol. But as long as it taste good and smells good, That's really the most important thing.

Hahaha, I was already worried that nobody wanted to say a word about the appearance of my failed cake. 😂
It indeed isn't the prettiest one, but for the taste it works. This morning I had a piece of it, it's better now when it cooled down, now I do believe it is edible 😉

Ehhh, that's a lot of orange, can I get 2 kg please 💃 haha. Anyways, the orange cake looks good though, for me its color looks perfect. That would give an original taste to it for sure 🤤🤤✨

I don't mind sharing some oranges with you 🍊🍊 😇
The taste is better than its look 😆

...I can't guarantee it is safe for consumption..

I can't guarantee it is safe for consumption

Instead, a small gift will land in her wallet. 😉

Gracias @mipiano ☺️

Feli domingo @mdrguez ✨️🎶

Maybe I’d agree with you that it’s better you play the piano than to become a chef. But anyway, as they say, practice makes perfect, maybe next time you’ll get it just right. By the way, how did it taste?

The taste is very good, and today I am convinced that it is 100% safe for consumption - I survived the yesterday's tasting 😂

Good afternoon @mipiano. Thank you for revealing the solution to the riddle; I couldn't stand the suspense any longer. Thank you so much for the recipe; that dessert looks delicious, 😍 although I would have loved to see a 36-kilo orange and mandarin tart. My congratulations to @mdrguez for his near-correct guess.

Happy Saturday! 🤗

Good evening @enraizar. I think the photo didn't do justice, ie everyone thought it was less in kg. 😅 They are quite heavy, full of juice!

Hahah, that would be a huge cake, but you see, I'd better focus on piano, not on baking as this cake wasn't very successful 😂

Thank you and good night, happy Sunday 🤗

Good morning @mipiano, I certainly didn't expect those tangerines and oranges to be so juicy. 😃

Have a great Sunday! 🤗

😃🤗🤗🤗🤗

Gracias @enraizar, un abrazo 🤗.

I really messed up big time!!! Way too much!!!

Now, I'll keep the recipe and analyze why it didn't rise... the oil and yogurt make the dough heavier, so the problem may be the yeast or baking powder... and that the flour is cake flour.

I also messed up with the cake hahhaa. Until one moment the dough was rising well, and then, it just became that crooked and flat 🤦‍♀️😂

36kg!!!! That's just crazy! When are you back again for the second pick?

The student with the orchard said next Sunday (tomorrow) haha but for me it's impossible tomorrow. And although I gave away the majority of them (to my son and his flatmates, friend, neighbour etc) we still have at least for a week 😂

36kg?
Jumbo orange😀
I now feel sorry for Mr. Mipiano 🙂

I said in my post it was a real workout for him 😆

Hello, @mipiano I never had an experience if eating an orange cake. Can I have my slice please? Just kidding. Orange cake is not that commonly served here in the north of Cebu Island, so whenever I see this kind of post, I wonder what its taste was. Your recipe is quite intriguing and I want to try it myself. Oranges are good fruits, and I love them, which oddly, I also like cakes. I might be so happy if I eat both of them in single recipe. The cake turned out good, and the burnt aura means you successfully cooked another version of orange cake. May I ask how was the taste? Did it taste burnt or perfect?
