I’ve been thinking about starting a seasonal vegan sushi study group for about a year now.

After moving to Germany, I began making vegan maki rolls. It was so much fun and tasty that my love for it kept growing, I started serving them at markets and for catering. My exploration of vegetarian sushi soon went beyond maki rolls—into chirashi sushi, pressed sushi, inari sushi, hand rolls, steamed sushi… and as I kept researching, even more ideas came up. Temari sushi and chakin sushi sound lovely too. Some people even deep fry sushi rolls! And I’d love to explore the world of nigiri with vegetables as well. The ideas just keep coming.

At home, at markets, for catering, at events… sushi everywhere. Thanks for the photos in Krakow, @mynewlife !

Rather than doing it alone, I have a strong feeling that it would be much more fun to gather with a few people, chat, and cook together. Not a formal cooking class, but something more relaxed—everyone bringing their ideas (and beer), and cooking together.

This actually reminds me of something from about ten years ago, when I was living in Berlin. We had a small gathering like that back then: food lover friends would meet at someone’s home, cook something together, and eat. We often had a fun theme. This gathering made me even more fell in love with cooking and food. It was such a joyful time 🥺

Interestingly, today I made a pavlova—something we often talked about back then—and sent a message to our old Facebook group. From time to time, we still exchange messages like this. “This looks so delicious!” or “Remember when we made this?” ...

I am shy and introverted, and I sometimes worry, “What if no one is interested?” So I’ve been hesitating to start this seasonal vegan sushi study group or gathering. But reconnecting with old friends and remembering how happy and fun that time was made me think: maybe I could just try it out at my place first. It could be online too. I must just start. How do you think?

Writing this all down feels really good. My thoughts are clearer, and I feel motivated again. Thanks to Hive, last year I was able to roll sushi while traveling in Kraków—and this year, I’m even thinking… should I make sushi at Hive Fest!? I probably will ☺️

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!

Had no idea if anything such as vegan sushi recipe already exist; and here you're talking about maki rolls, chirashi sushi, pressed sushi, inari sushi, hand rolls, steamed sushi....OMG, you're amazing!
Just tell me the venue & time for your study group events 😊

My gf and I love vegan sushi even though we mostly order sushi. If you lived in Hamburg, we would already have a group of 3 people :D The idea sounds awesome, and Leipzig is pretty progressive - I bet you will find a lot of people who would love to join such a group! I would say: jump over your shadow and just start - you can not lose anything by hanging a sheet on a bulletin board in a grocery shop :)
