For dinner on days when cooking is a chore, I often make curry. As I wrote the other day, curry is a wonderful menu item that is easy to make and also provides meat and vegetables in one dish, which my family enjoys.
Yesterday, I went shopping at a slightly larger supermarket and found that House Foods (a major Japanese food manufacturer) had created a “Black Curry” and “White Curry” section. Black Curry” is indeed black, but it is a color that can be found in some brands. On the other hand, “White Curry” looks like a stew! This bothered me. So I bought a box and went home.
I looked it up on the Internet and found that white curry originated in Hokkaido, Japan. According to the product website, “We reduced the use of turmeric (yellow) and chili (red), which have color, to the utmost limit and combined them with white ingredients such as wheat flour and rice flour". The roux has a slight yellow tinge, but because milk is added in the finish, it is almost as white as the stew. In 2006, House Foods had already released the first White Curry, but I guess it didn't catch on that much...I had never seen it before. This product itself is a limited time product.
The finished dish looks like a stew! However, when you take a taste, you will find that it tastes unmistakably like curry. It is surprisingly spicy, given its appearance.
My family said it was delicious, but I could see they were a bit wary of eating it. When food looks and tastes too different, our brains get confused😅 This "white curry" also smelled like curry, looked like stew, and tasted like curry...so everyone in the family was doubly or thrice confused while eating it, myself included.
So while it was an interesting opportunity, I don't think I would purchase this “white curry” again😂If you are interested, please give it a try!

料理が作るのが面倒な日は、カレーにしてしまいがちです。簡単なうえ、一品で肉や野菜が摂れて家族も喜ぶ素晴らしいメニューだというのは先日も書いた通りです。
昨日は少し大きめのスーパーに買い物に行ったところ、ハウスの「ブラックカレー」と「ホワイトカレー」のコーナーが作られているのを発見してしまいました。白か黒か・・・ すこし悩みましたが、「ブラックカレー」のほうは確かに黒いことは黒いのですが、銘柄によっては見かける色です。一方「ホワイトカレー」はどう見てもシチュー！これは気になる。ということで一箱買って帰りました。
調べてみたところ、ホワイトカレーは北海道を発祥とするカレーだそうです。ホームページによれば、『色があるターメリック（黄色）や唐辛子（赤色）を極限まで減らし、小麦粉や米粉などの白い素材と組み合わせました』とのこと。ルウは少し黄色味をおびていますが、仕上げに牛乳を入れるのでほとんどシチューと同じ白色になります。2006年には既にハウス食品が発売していたようですが、それほど流行らなかったのでしょうか・・・。この商品自体は、期間限定商品とされています。
出来あがりの見た目は、どう見てもシチュー！しかし、一口食べてみるとまぎれもないカレーの味。この見た目で、辛いのだからびっくりです。
家族も「美味しい」とは言っていたものの、やや警戒しながら食べている様子がうかがえました。食べ物って、見かけと味が違いすぎると脳がバグるというか、混乱してしまうんですね😅この「ホワイトカレー」も、匂いはカレー、見た目はシチュー、味はカレー・・・で、食べながら皆、二重、三重に大混乱でした。
そんなわけで面白い機会ではありましたが、この「ホワイトカレー」、リピートはしない気がします😂興味があったらぜひ試してみてください。
