I saw the news posted to 9gag the other night and then went and looked for it yesterday morning. There is a NOTAM for the Kwajalein Atoll in Micronesia for an "electromagnetic radiation hazard that has potential for loss of life". Now what in the hell is this? It is set to end May 30th! Seriously what is a 5 month long radiation hazard? That DOESN'T sound good. Of course there is zero news about this anywhere, just the NOTAMS.
It was the last of the subzero mornings and we ended up at -10F by dawn. It sat at that temperature for much of the morning and it wasn't until near noon when it finally got over 0F.
I got my clothes in the wash first thing so they could be dried in time for me to go out and get the birds let out. The boys were up a bit later than their normal school days and they plopped down to watch the Kraken game for a little while but then ended up outside for at least 2 hours in the -10F temps. They went to the creek and were having a blast on the river of ice. They came back to the house well worn out and a bit on the cold side.
It was nice to have the Kraken play a daytime game for once. Only problem is they got their ass whooped by the Penguins 3-0. Their great run had to come to an end sometime but they have another game tonight in NY so I hope they got a chance to recuperate.
We got some sun but it just wasn't much during the day. This time of year is a deep dark pit that the house sits in.
While the Kraken game was on I spent much of the time in the kitchen working on cleaning the counters which had become a bit of a mess. The boys having been cooking have also not been cleaning the best afterwards, so I went and did a good cleaning. It took much of the Kraken's game for me to get it as far as I got.
I'd been wanting to fly the balsa plane but am worried about the propeller and the battery for landing. I came up with the perfect solution that is super light weight but strong enough. I cut off 2 safety pins and have them stuck into the balsa wood. They make the plane sit so the battery is just above the ground and it rides on the landing gear and the tail. Today it will get it's first flight.
So leave it to nature. We just got the record cold snap and now we ramp up into a winter storm warning over the next couple of days then by the weekend it will be 40F and raining! The weather this year is so neurotic, the mood swings are so severe, and the extreme flip flopping is so out of character. Tomorrow morning we will likely wake up to a few inches of snow and more than likely school canceled or delayed, but with up to a foot expected over the day they may just cancel.
After getting the kitchen cleaned up I had the space available to make a new batch of tortillas while the Buffalo game was on. It was a trouncing and the Steelers looked like a bush league team.
I made a standard 6 cup batch and made sure to add in a big dollop of honey.
I sectioned the dough out into 24 pieces then pressed out the tortillas and got them on the griddle.
With a number of these larger this time I also used the roller to roll them out thinner and larger. This came in handy for dinner as I used the largest for a wrap.
A batch of 2 dozen tortillas takes only 45 minutes to finish and they are truly the best fresh off the griddle.
For dinner I did a quicker rice meal with a salad and I used the largest tortilla as a wrap with both the rice and salad. It was super tasty and made me remember why I like making them bigger. The next batch will be rolled to make them all bigger.
After the tortillas were done I put on the movie Twister while @stryeyz worked on her laptop and I got dinner made. The movie is one I have watched for many years and I have come to understand just how hokey some of it is and how bad Bill's acting was in much of it. One of the things I didn't realize until later was the author of the original story, I have a couple of his books he wrote about how to write. I will say the book Twister is far better than the movie as I read it when I was a kid.
Today is our calm before the next storm and I have the house to myself since the boys are back at school after the holiday. The storm inbound will complicate things and I have to get the snowblower checked on, I know I need to check the oil on the engine. It's time to break out the summer wear as it's to be 20F today! A whole 40 degrees difference from a few days ago, but still below freezing.
I have more cleaning in the house to do as the kitchen floor needs attention, house plants need watering, boys to and from school, tend to my stupid skin, it's our dog's 7th birthday today, I'll get something made for dinner this evening, the Kraken play the Rangers, and I'll go see how frozen the greenhouse got.
