Panda Express | ❌ Spoiler Alert: It Wasn’t Exactly What I Imagined

in Foodies Bee Hive2 days ago

Hello, FOODIES! ✨

I swear, doom scrolling of food is one way of convincing me to try new cuisines or new restaurants. I kept seeing this restaurant all over my FYP, and my curiosity kicked in. I watched this guy in his car doing a mukbang, devouring a whole meal of Panda Express. 😋🍴

Damn, I felt like I was left out, haha! 😆 But luckily, some of the popular restaurants from the US are now in the Philippines. Yeah, I have to try it myself! I have a high expectation of Panda Express's famous orange chicken, but spoiler alert! It did not turn as I imagined.😅 But before I spill the hot tea, let me walk you through how it all started.

On top of my orange chicken situation, it was a bad time. Could not have been worse…. It was a weekend, lunchtime, and there was a concert going on nearby. Perfect combination, right? 😅

pandaex5.jpeg

The place was packed, and the line was long. It was a good 15 minutes until it was my turn. I still ordered the orange chicken, but wait! They just ran out, so I had to wait for another five minutes. 😩

pandaex3.jpeg

So might as well order an additional order to make myself feel better about the situation. I added the fish, eggplant tofu, and an egg soup. I was here for the full experience.

pandaex9.jpg

I paid for my order and sat in a high chair. A miracle to snag a seat in chaos. Finally, I saw the famous orange chicken with my own eyes. It was shiny, golden, and saucy.

The final moment - the first bite. 🥁🥁🥁 (drum roll, pls!)

.... and it was not exactly a whole disappointment, but it was not what I was expecting.

pandaex7.jpeg

It was not the explosion of flavor I imagined after the hype in my head. The tanginess was not there. The chicken was on the dry side. Ughh… almost but not quite. 😩😩😩

pandaex10.jpeg

I figured out that I needed some veggies and some additional protein on my plate. Honestly, it was average. Nothing stood out or felt memorable.

pandaex11.jpeg

What was memorable was the lack of saltiness. It was missing a punch of the ocean. On the counter, they did mention that there’s no MSG added, so maybe that explained the milder flavor.

The rice was not giving. 💁 I want that oiliness that makes it comforting, but it still has a decent flavor. It was fine, but I did not get the spotlight I was wishing for.
pandaex12.jpeg

Overall, my curiosity was satisfied. Not the exact outcome that I imagined, but at least I got to eat the orange chicken. It did not get the tangy notes and the hype. I appreciated the No MSG, even though it gave the milder flavors.

pandaex19.jpg

It was average, I would say, but I swear you can find a better one with the same price point. The total bill was around $9.

Why no MSG?? D: That's like the best and I assume by default in Chinese food?
I also see this brand often in movies/shows haha nice that they are here now too! The food looks good to me though, although the rice does look dry. :/

I think in the past some scientists without credible proof spread rumours about MSG being bad for health so many people especially parents don't let their children consume such food. Health conscious people are not gonna touch this but this claim was debunked later and in normal amount it's pretty good but lots of people still avoid it like plague so some hotels don't add it. You guys add it in everything there right? That's what my Filipino friend told me. I was quite surprised to hear that.

We use the brand "Ajimonoto" a Japanese brand. I think it was a propaganda before that using MSG is bad for you but turned out not to be.

I heard those too, but as far as I know, we still are using it here A LOT. Haha. But I guess it's an American brand too so they probably brought that here... But I also know about the debunked so maybe at some point they'll start using it again.

So true!! 😩 I was thinking the same but they labeled themselves as "American-Chinese" resto.

Yeah, the rice was dry, parang kulang na lang manghingi ako ng oil, haha! 😆

It's mostly the westerners who complain about things they don't understand. XD To think MSGs have been used for 100 years by now. :D

Yeah this happens sometimes. I have a rule and that is to not trust influencers review. They hype up ordinary things as extraoridinary. Maybe they like it but for us, we have do decide that by ourselves. You did and now you don't need to go there haha.

Does hotels charge this much normally in PH? You could get top tier food here with that price in India.

Or maybe these influencers were paid. 😆 I always want to try it myself, haha! I will be a judge of that!😆
Fasfoods here are around $5-$10. Restos about $10-$15. High-end buffets can be around $100.

Yes, most of them are paid xd.

I went to really good restuarant recently to get 10 Parotta and butter chicken plus beef fry. The price was around 10$ but the food was for 3 people 😅. Can't review high end restuarants because they charge for ambience which I don't really care about haha.

The same thing happened to me as happened to you. I went somewhere with high expectations and left disappointed. The chicken looked good, but unfortunately it wasn't that great. I hope next time is better! Cheers!

Right? 😩 But I gotta try it myself. Well, it is what it is.

Hive Power Up Day - December 1st 2025

Monosodium glutamate is addictive and gives food a delicious flavor, but it's not healthy. Thank goodness you didn't have it. It really affects the flavor; you'll notice that it's much milder without this seasoning. I'm sorry the dish wasn't what you expected. It's happened to me before. Best regards

The hyped died 😅. I hope they have an MSG option, hehe.
