June 2025 annual garden update

in HiveGarden5 days ago

The weather is really heating up now, and many of the plants in the garden are thriving. The buttercrunch lettuce can be seen in the first two pictures. Amazed it has not started bolting yet. At any time I can go out and pick some, its really nice to have that. Amazed the bugs have not gone after the lettuces more than they have. I guess thats a good thing.. lol

Last year the lettuces did not do as well, we got an early start this year and has been given much greens.

I plan on letting them bolt and drop seeds, hopefully they will come back next year. Some of our other lettuces did that so maybe the buttercrunch can as well.

The arugula lettuce has bolted and will hopefully drop seeds as well. Hopefully the dirt in the beds do not settle to much more and I wont need to add dirt again. Letting those seeds come up.

Sweet potato vines are coming up, so hopefully they are growing some nice spuds under the dirt.

Something has been eating the brussel sprouts in the raised beds.

Awhile back we removed some of the brussel sprouts from the beds to make space. I put them in the ground and happy to see them growing.

Looking like the garlic should be done soon.

The music hardneck garlic looks done to me, I think its time to pull them.

The bottom leaves are dying back, so I think its time.

Pole beans are taking over the trellis.

I see them producing flowers, so soon we should have bean pods.

They have made their way up to the top, soon they will come down the other side.

Cauliflower is doing well, they seem to handle the heat better than our potted plants. I guess the dirt insulates them better from the extreme heat.

The carrots are coming up as well, slower than the radish. We got to pick some of those already.

Chard is doing great, its huge!

I wonder if its any good letting it get so big. Or if I have to keep it small.

Bush beans are coming up as well, these do not require any growing support.

We can see bean pods already forming. I really like beans, they keep growing long after the peas stop which is nice.

I had four of them but they did not plant well and died back. Next year I will direct sow these.

Thornless blackberries are coming back after being transplanted.. happy to see them alive.

Horseshoe beds are full of melons.

Saw one so far, but I bet there are more into that vine patch.

Got both watermelon and cantaloupes growing in the horseshoe bed.

Wow, compared to last year they are doing great. I think we overwatered them last year.. this year we are doing our best to just let the rains do the work. But ready to water them if we get a week long drought.

Hah we got one trying to escape.

Broccoli came up and gave us a couple crowns, but I will let the rest bolt and drop their seeds to hope they come up next year.

Starting these early was key.. we started them in April this year, last year we started in June.. too late.. lol

Sorry about the messy garden, my focus has been going towards building the upcoming garlic area. Along with getting the infrastructure in place to support it (solar and well). So much of my time has been going toward that and not pulling weeds.. lol

At any time I can go out and pick some, its really nice to have that.

That pleasure of picking your own grown stuff justifies all the hard work, you have a big area to take care. I would love to see how that Thornless blackberries grow, the bean plants look amazing - do you use some organic pesticides ?

Indeed, the feeling of just collecting my own grown food is just so special.

We mostly use insecticidal soap, which has salts in it that kill most insects.

Never heard about insecticidal soap earlier, will have to try it out.

Your garden’s looking amazing this year! Love how you're letting some plants self seed super smart. The melons, beans, and garlic all sound like they’re thriving. Don’t stress the weeds, that garlic setup sounds worth it!

Thank you, yeah I think it will be helpful for next year for the next set of plants to grow.

Wow, that is impressive. Hopefully this heat dome we have going on right now isn't impacting you too much. It's probably just another Monday for you though, being down south!

Thank you, it has been quite hot the last few days that is for sure. But I have a good setup to go water everything in my UTV if need be.

That's great to hear! We finally got some relief the other day and got the lawn mowed.

Oh ya man it is rockin this year! sometimes, I find the perennials take a couple years to get going and certain veggies just like one area over another. Trial and error.

Looks like you have an amazing start on this year's garden. Might have to make some time for a garden update of my own!

Hah yeah it indeed is going well this year. I will be doing a post on more of my perennials soon. I just covered the blackberries here, and lots more to talk about.

Nice man, yeah I bet you got lots going on in yours too.

Wow! The garden is beautifully made. There are so many plants, and they're all so healthy! It's so pleasing to the eye, especially since I'm a veggie girl and gardening is one of my hobbies. It's so satisfying to harvest what you've planted.

Indeed it is a special feeling to harvest what you have grown. I am a big fan of gardens and getting tasty things from them.

I’ve always wanted to try growing lettuce or beans, but I’m still figuring out how not to kill a succulent lol.

Hah I started off growing cacti and succulents and then went from there.

It looks like you are doing everything right, nice job.

Thanks very much.. it sure is

That chard is a beast! 😆 I’m always torn between picking it young and letting it grow huge just to see how big it’ll get. Do you notice any difference in taste when it gets that big?

Honestly we have not ate much, but it would seem the younger leaves are better. Probably a good idea for me to cut them back and eat the young leaves.

Wow, great progress! That butter lettuce looks so healthy, full and crunchy. Those melons are looking quite promising as well. I think it is a good sign when there is so much growth that one tries to escape haha

Thanks, yeah lots coming up here.

What a nice green garden, I'm excited for harvest time.

Me too, should be quite the experience gathering everything.

Ohh I love gardening specially in planting different varieties of veggies. It was so nice seing your garden in that beautiful and healthy plants.

Thanks much, glad you enjoyed seeing my garden.

Wow! Everyone in the garden is doing great, especially those buttercrunch lettuces! Their leaves look crunchy and inviting, I want to have a bite, lol 😄 I pity the Brussel sprouts, though. I hope they still recover.

It sounds like you need a huge preparation for the imminent drought - a good water system to supply enough water for these veggies.

Weeds are invasive; they grow and thrive faster than our blinks, lol 😂 Kidding aside, they are actually one of the most tiring uninvited visitors to deal with in the garden. But, pulling them regularly will spare you from a day of intense battle, weeding. Sometimes we really can't do it regularly, especially since it's not just the weeds that we are dealing with in the garden; there are a lot more tasks to do.

It was a nice stop for me in your garden, till next time as I do my garden hopping in this beautiful community. 😊 💚

Luckily we have a good watering system, a transfer pump, car battery and a 300 gallon water tank. Just have to drag the hose around. If I need to be more mobile I can set up a 55 gallon water tank to my UTV to water everything.

Indeed pulling those weeds up consistently is key, otherwise they overgrow. Where I live the winters kill them all, so its just a battle during the growing season.

Best of luck with your garden too.

wow! you're completely prepared for the hot season! And oh, I realized that somehow winter helps the garden soil by killing the weeds, but I hope it won't kill the important plants. 😅 If it does, I hope the important plants wake up faster than the weeds in Spring haha 😅

Wuau, what beauty, without a doubt, a true healthy agroalimenary plot, I loved it, thanks for sharing with such achievement, congratulations 😘 👏 😘 😘 😘 😘 😘

Glad you enjoyed seeing all the plants.

I like to eat lettuce as a salad with my meal. Good job. Have a great day 🍀

Surprised to see no Raspberry Pi or ESP32's tracking soil moisture and nutrients.

Setting up an IOT array of sensors sounds like a good project, but I would first need to get wifi working out there.
