Traveling the World #389 - Costco @ Osaka, Japan
Hi Everyone,
Yes, that's correct. We did go to Costco! In fact, it was one of the highlights of our snack haul before we came back to Australia. We are members of Costco, so if we have been living there for more than a month, we need to check it out for ourselves.
We hired a car and drove to Amagasaki for our Costco adventure. The warehouse layout mirrors Costco locations worldwide, with towering shelves stacked with oversized packages of goods. The hot food area was the same, though with slightly different food than what we were used to.
Imagine bulk-sized packs of premium sushi-grade fish at the back, we don’t have it back home! Load of Japanese snacks but in bulk. Drinks, frozen food, and my favourite Japanese laundry detergents were also in large packs. I wish I could bring it home as they smell so nice but of course, it was not possible. There are also items we were familiar with in particular Costco branded products can also be purchased here.
In terms of home goods, there were so many items for a Japanese household. Again I wish I could bring everything home but not possible. In particular, I was fascinated with the futon dryer, which would solve many problems we have at home on our massive quilt. One thing to take note that Japanese electronics have a different voltage so check what is suitable for your country.
No trip to Costco is complete without getting some food from the food takeaway. Clam chowder, chicken sticks and potatoes we’ve never seen back home. For 980 Yen, you get a massive bucket of chicken and wedges, an amazing price to feed the two kids who were so hungry after our shop.
It is recommended to drive a car here especially if you are thinking of buying lots of things. Public transport is available but not as frequent as in the city, especially on the weekend. Of course, make sure you bring your membership card, they do check at the doors just like we do back home so don’t forget that. We were very impressed with the quality of food in particular the sashimi and sushi, great value!
