Introduction

This is my first time post in Weekend Experiences community. Today I would like to share my personal goals for 2026 and what I am going to do to reach them and to more fully realize my full potential.

My Top Three Goals For 2026

  1. Work on becoming a better husband and father
  2. Improve my health and fitness and drop twenty pounds by 2027
  3. Improve our family finances

All images in this post are from our recent weekend trip to Altura restaurant in Seattle. My wife gave me this as a Christmas gift.

This was a very nice appetizers plus nine course dinner at one of the finest Seattle restaurants. I might publish a separate post in the future about this experience to give it justice.

Becoming a better husband and father
I think I am already a very good father and husband, but we are all human and we all have our weaknesses. One of my personality traits is that I tend to take many things personally and combined with another personality trait of having a quick hot temper this makes for an explosive combination.

This trait combination sometimes leads to unnecessary conflict in our family. My wife is a very strong personality and she is also a very type A personality, which means that she always has a list of things to be done and she wants them done yesterday.

On a recent occasion we talked on the phone and I told her that I am going to get one of her items from her list done before she is home. There was a confusion about which item that will be so when she arrived home she noticed that the item she thought was going to be done was not done.

She simply asked a question, but the way it was said tripped up my two trait combination which led to unnecessary conflict in front of our daughter. We had a lengthy conversation about all of it and my wife came up with a really good suggestion.

Instead of taking it personally and escalating I should simply pause, and approach the situation with humor and say something like: "Honey I have done something else and we have plenty of time for getting the other item done and it will be done on ..."

This is basically a universal formula for these kind of situations and while I have not had a chance to apply it yet as we generally have a very peaceful relationship I think it is going to help with a majority of the situations where I tend to get defensive.

Improve my health and fitness
While I mostly eat healthy and try to get ten thousand steps daily and three weight lifting workouts per week my weight has been steadily creeping up over the years. It first started after the age forty five. In the last five years it crept up from two hundred pounds to two hundred twenty one pounds this week.

First thing that I am going to do differently is to try to reduce my portions and eliminate snacks between meals. The second diet related item that I am going to tackle is going to be the hardest one: my sugar intake. I love sweets and that is my biggest vice!

Third action item is to add a daily quick ten to fifteen minutes calisthenics style workouts. I am thinking of doing those mid morning to get my metabolism up and running.

The goal is to get to two hundred ten pounds by March when we are going to go to Maui for a vacation. At that point I am going to evaluate my progress and assess what is working and what is not working.

Improve our family finances
While 2025 was a great year for us financially as we eliminated a four thousand monthly mortgage payment and I got a promotion. Which allowed me to fully cover our monthly expenses still re-juggling of properties resulted in some borrowing from our joint account and some of my wife's savings.

My goal is to return those loans at least partially in 2026. I am slowly returning them from my salary but there is also around forty thousand that is stuck in 6% bonds that are under water. If Federal Reserve cuts rates this year and bond yields drop I will be able to free up those funds and it will be a great contribution to eliminate the debt.

Another action item is to get our island house ready for some short term rentals this coming summer. Income from that is going to be helpful as well.

Conclusion
With my three goals set for the year and a list of action items to achieve them clearly defined I think it is looking pretty good for 2026.

That's quite a comprehensive list man and I think, yours and mine match to some extent, with me taking too many things personally. I too plan to follow this universal formula to stay calm and control my mood - it happens rarely but then it should be completely stopped. It's wiser for a man to be silent (especially after forties) - you can never win a women's heart otherwise, because they don't know what they want and they expect you to know that😀

I think I got an extraordinary woman at home that actually knows what she wants. But for 99.9% of women you are absolutely right.

Nine course diner! WOW, that is a massive amount of rounds!

Losing weight. I have a lot of success with: Intermittent fasting in combination with low carbs. 16 hours no food, just water, black coffee, and/or plain tea (I drink fresh ginger tea). It'll take a week or two before starting to lose weight. The low carbs, being replaced by more protein, will make you feel more saturated, so you'll start eating less over a time, a few weeks already. When being strict on low carbs, one will also start to have more energy. I really like this way of losing weight, since I always feel satisfied, no hungry feeling. Perhaps only at lunch time, for half an hour or so. I stop eating at 10PM and start eating late afternoon, early evening.

I do intermittent as well, I eat between noon and 8 PM only. My problem is that I don't do low carbs and what is worse I drink tea 3-4 times a day with no sugar in it, but with candy or some other desert.

And that is after reducing sugar intake by at least half. I think my next milestone would be to cut down on sugar even more and then go after low carb.

But thank you for sharing your routine, it highlights what I am doing wrong and what I should shoot for.

Sugar is the killer indeed. I went all the way from lots of sugar to no sugar when I stopped growing in lenght, end of youth. Since then, no sugar gravings anymore, well some time after I cut sugar I got to that state. Took perhaps a year.

Best of luck with the process.

Good luck with your goals! The idea of having an island house for rentals would be a great source of passive income while you sleep.

It will not be completely passive, but somewhat...

I think we all get triggered and having a wife tends to bring out the good and bad sometimes. More good than bad and we have to compromise to keep the peace as we all react and think differently. I would have acted similarly to you as having a must do now list and having completed one but not the expected one is also crazy. I would have thought compromise on both sides here and nit just on your side.

Well that situation was as much on me as it was on her. On the bright side my wife told me today that I used this strategy already twice successfully.

These things happening do make us think on how we react.
