Crash Bang Wallop

From a very young age, I knew there was something wrong with everyone else, but even so, I was still shocked by people’s behaviour during the whole Covid madness, and I haven’t had much faith in humanity since.

Until yesterday.

There we were, my brother and I, tootling into town in our battered old jalopy when suddenly —bang — a jolt, and straight into the back of the car in front we crashed, somehow managing to wedge the fella’s towbar underneath the front of our car... a manoeuvre only a truly experienced driver could pull off.

Out hops the other driver to inspect the damage. I’m braced for wailing, recriminations and maybe some gnashing of teeth but instead he’s all sweetness and light, calmly calling a mechanic friend rather than the police.

Within moments, a crowd gathers, not to gawp, but to help. Two buildery-looking lads (real men) appear and immediately try lifting one car off the other with their bare hands. A kind lady takes my brother aside and comforts him while he indulges in his usual crisis-time bawling. Everyone else stands around offering suggestions and encouragement.

“We’re gonna need a jack,” announces the driver of the wounded car.

“Did someone say jack?” asks a woman pulling up in a posh-looking jeep. “I’ve a top-of-the-range one in the boot.”

The buildery lads get to work, the car is lifted free, and all the while the other driver keeps reassuring my brother that it could happen to a bishop and nobody’s hurt.

And that was that. No screaming. No blame. No threats. Just handshakes and smiles.

Both parties drive away in good humour.

Sometimes I just love people.

All too rare indeed...

Wow! Miracles still exist.

Indeed they do! They're alive, well and living in Tipperary!

Edit: and thanks for the reblog

That's a great outcome. It could have gone very different if everyone involved werent calm and even tempared.

Speaking of people, I think the average person just wants an easy-going life, we're all just getting on with it. Most people too, are happy to help and assist strangers, if they can.

A few days ago we were in the car, and as we were about to take off the battery was dead. So, as we're there with the bonet up a guy walks over and asks if we need help, so he leaves and comes back with a cool battery pack to give it a jolt. A bad situation was quickly turned around, and we were on our way back home to get the kids fed.

Infairness, a bunch of people drove and walked past without offering to help, but all it took was that one guy to sort it.

I agree. Most people are decent enough when given the chance.

We’re fairly isolated out here and rarely see a soul, but even we’ve occasionally been called into action in pursuit of marauding cattle or runaway dogs.

Ahh, that’s a heartwarming story. I’ve had a similar experience when I was stuck in heavy snow, and I’ve never forgotten it. You know, when people do good, it actually spreads out as it makes you want to do good in return. I’ve also noticed that when we are positive, more positive things come.

All we need is a little kindness. It’s amazing how many things can be done nicely. I’m in the chippy, waiting for my fish and chips and the lady in front of me is giving me a big smile, probably because I’m smiling while reading this. Lol

I agree entirely! Change your attitude, change your world. Positivity brings positive outcomes and what you expect is very often what you get.
Fish and chips? With your cooking skills? Ah Mariah....

Hahaha, been a while and ohh was nice, though I ate mostly the meaty cod, sunny and no time to fiddle in the kitchen, gotta be outdoors! Checking my babies (plants). Assuming yours must be doing good. Lol

We have a bit of that rare sunshine today so I've been watering and mulching for hours with no end in sight. Gotta look after the babies.

Nice! An elevation for all occurred in your elevated presence, Robbie notwithstanding. Dude must have known that calling the police would have soaked up the rest of that day for all of you, and lots of time and energy going forward. Slowly we are all learning that expected responses are traps, especially if insurance is involved in any way. And you have renewed faith in humankind! Best of all.

(Robbie might want to consider keeping Aconite 200 on his person at all times for events that have him blubbering on the sidelines)

Oh my! What a fright! Quick, get out the Aconite:) I really must start carrying it about when accompanying Robbie's on his adventures.

I've never seen so much collaboration and help unless someone really get hurt than need some ER...

Irish people do tend to be kind and helpful, especially country folk. I remember a couple of years ago our car being stuck in the snow about 100 metres away from our gate and not one , not two but three farmers on tractors teaming together to get us out of trouble.

"it could happen to a bishop and nobody’s hurt"

😂

No "whose going to pay for this??"

Such a nice experience that everyone was wanting to jump in and help. It should always be like that.

Hello!

It really did restore my faith in human nature. The gulf between the anger I expected and the kindness we encountered was genuinely heartwarming. And you're right. It should always be like that.

I think your brother might have helped you get a pass on this one. Poor lad, so distraught. That last line...a bit of change from your usual claims of misanthropy. :)

Nice to have a happy story. As always told with your customary flare.

Since last Friday, I’ve been a recovering misanthrope:)
It sure did help that Robbie was blubbering away. I mean it's only the hardest of hearts that isn't moved by the sight of a grown man crying.

Are you sure you didn't dream that? Sounds a bit too good... But glad that it worked out so nicely and that some people don't get all emotional right away with those happenings. And absolutely glad that nobody was hurt.

It was definitely real and we have a dent in the car to prove it!
