Here's my contribution to BeerSaturday 450 hosted by @detlev with a type of beer I don't often drink, perhaps even for the first time: a West Coast IPA from the Quebec microbrewery 5e Baron, The Day We Hit The Coast. I've been wanting to try this style and its design for a while now, with the wave gently lapping at the sand of a beach, a welcome sight in the heart of winter in Montreal 😀.
Voici ma participation au BeerSaturday 450 avec un type de bière que je ne bois pas souvent, même peut-être la première fois, il s'agit d'un West Coast IPA par la microbrasserie québécoise 5e Baron, The Day We Hit The Coast. Cela fait quelques temps que je voulais essayer ce type et ce design avec cette vague qui vient tranquillement mouillée le sable d'une plage, fait du bien au coeur de l'hiver à Montréal.
Here is a map of Quebec where I can show you the exact location of the brewery. The 5e Baron is located in the heart of Old Aylmer, very close to Ottawa but on the Quebec side.

The microbrewery 5e Baron was founded in 2020 by Dimitri Carrabin, Jacob Barrette, and Stephen Washer. In a nod to history from the owners, the brewery takes its name from Matthew Whitworth-Aylmer, the 5th Baron, former Governor General of British North America in 1830. Upon opening in 2020, RateBeer awarded it the prize for 3rd Best New Microbrewery in the World. Not a bad start.
La microbrasserie 5e Baron a été fondée en 2020 par Dimitri Carrabin, Jacob Barrette et Stephen Washer. Petit clin d'oeil historique des propriétaire, la brasserie tire son nom de Matthew Whitworth-Aylmer, ancien gouverneur général de l’Amérique du Nord britannique en 1830, le 5ème baron. Dès l'ouverture en 2020, RateBeer lui décerne le prix de la 3e meilleure nouvelle microbrasserie au monde. Pas mal pour débuter.
🍺 Tasting / Dégustation :
The Day We Hit The Coast is a 7% ABV West Coast IPA brewed in collaboration with Sawdust City Brewing in Ontario, a brewery specializing in traditional IPAs. It was hopped with Peachy Keen (60%), Motueka, and Nectaron (20% each). This is the first time I've seen the percentages listed. Interesting... In the glass, it has a clear, amber color topped with a beautiful white head. The hops used in this West Coast IPA are often found in NEIPAs, such as Motueka. Then there's Peachy Keen Euphorica, an experimental and modern hop with peach notes. The first sip has a slightly candy-like taste, but that must be due to the Peachy Keen, a sweet note. Then the bitterness takes over, with a lingering, resinous finish. Completely typical of the NEIPAs I usually drink, but this beer, with its fruity aromatic profile, might be masking the drier, more bitter structure of traditional West Coast beers. A nice find.
The Day We Hit The Coast est une West Coast IPA avec 7 % d'alcool en collaboration avec la Sawdust City Brewing en Ontario, spécialisée dans les IPA traditionnelles. Elle a été houblonnée avec Peachy Keen (60%), Motueka et Nectaron (20% chaque). C'est la première fois que je vois le pourcentage. Intéressant...
Dans le verre, on retrouve une robe claire bien ambrée surmontée d'une belle mousse blanche. Les houblons utilisés pour cette West Coast se trouvent souvent dans les NEIPA comme le Motueka. Puis le Peachy Keen Euphorica est un houblon expérimental et moderne avec des notes de pêche. A la première gorgée, on a un petit goût de bonbon mais cela doit être au Peachy Keen, une note sucrée. Puis l'amertume prend sa place avec une finale persistente et résineuse. Complétement des NEIPA que je bois généralement, mais cette bière avec ce profil aromatique fruité cache peut-être la structure plus sèche et amère des West Coast traditionnelle. Belle découverte.
Design
It was the design that attracted me, with this beach theme 😀. And besides, I wanted a West Coast IPA to see the difference with a NEIPA. On the can, you'll find the beer's name surrounded by the two brewery logos, 5e Baron and Sawdust City Brewing, on a sandy beach. And on the back, there's a list of hops with their percentages, which is helpful for understanding the beer's flavor profile.
C'est le design qui m'attiré avec cette plage 😀. Et en plus je voulais une West Coast IPA pour voir la différence avec une NEIPA. Sur la canette, on retrouve le nom de la bière entourée des deux logos des brasseries, 5e Baron et Sawdust City Brewing sur une plage de sable fin. Et au dos, il y a les houblons avec leur pourcentage, intéressant pour faire le profil aromatique de cette bière.
