Have you ever heard of the Strait of Magellan? I did, back in school, but I never thought I'd ever have the chance to cross it. But that's the unexpected quality of travel, and I can finally be there and see it with my own eyes. On our second day of traveling in Chile, aiming to travel the Carretera Austral, we still had a good stretch to go until we reached the start. We began our journey overland in Ushuaia, and if we wanted to get there quickly, some ferry rides were necessary. The geography of this part of the world allowed us to have this experience on the water, even transporting the little car along with us 😃.
¿Alguna vez has oído sobre el Estrecho de Magallanes? Yo sí, en la escuela, pero nunca pensé que alguna vez tendría la oportunidad de cruzarlo. Pero esas son las cosas improvisadas que traen los viajes, y finalmente puede estar ahí y verlo con mis propios ojos. En nuestro segundo día de viaje en Chile con el objetivo de recorrer la Carretera Austral, todavía teníamos un buen tramo hasta llegar al inicio de ella. Empezamos nuestro viaje por tierra en Ushuaia y si queríamos llegar rápido, eran necesarios algunos tramos en ferry. La geografía de esta parte del mundo nos permitió tener esta experiencia sobre el agua, transportando hasta el pequeño autito con nosotros 😃.
The day before, we had traveled more than 480 km from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Porvenir, Chile. We arrived very late at night, but our plan was to take the ferry the next day. This service departed at 8 AM and would take us to Punta Arenas in a 40-minute trip. This transfer is operated by the company Transbordadora Austral Broom, as well as other ferry services in Chile. At the time of our trip, we had to pay $60 to cross with the car and driver, plus $9.50 for an additional passenger (me). This is the fastest way to get to Punta Arenas, so we paid for the tickets online without any problems.
El día anterior habíamos recorrido más de 480 km desde Ushuaia Argentina hasta Porvenir, en Chile. Llegamos muy tarde en la noche, pero nuestra idea era tomar el ferry al día siguiente. Este servicio era a las 8 AM y nos llevaría hasta Punta Arenas en un viaje de unos 40 minutos. Este traslado lo realiza la empresa Transbordadora Austral Broom, así como también tienen otros servicios de ferry en Chile. Al momento de nuestro viaje, para cruzar con el auto y el conductor tuvimos que pagar $60, más $9.5 por un acompañante adicional (yo). Esta es la forma más rápida de llegar a Punta Arenas, así que pagamos los tickets en internet sin problemas.

What we didn't know (and what no one told us) was that before leaving, we had to check the status of the crossing because it's sometimes canceled due to unfavorable hydrometeorological conditions. We were so lucky that that's exactly what happened. We had arrived at the port, and they sent us home to wait for the weather to improve, and they would let us know when it would be possible to cross. Luckily, the Christmas-loving woman who had rented us the house was considerate and let us return until we needed to. That was a great gesture, because I even felt that it was colder there in Porvenir than in Ushuaia.
Lo que no sabíamos (y que nadie nos dijo), es que antes de salir debíamos revisar el estado del cruce porque en ocasiones se cancela por condiciones hidrometereológicas desfavorables. Tanta fue nuestra suerte que justo eso fue lo que sucedió. Habíamos llegado al puerto y nos mandaron a casa a esperar que el clima mejorara y ellos nos avisarían cuando sería posible cruzar. Por suerte, la señora fanática de navidad que nos había alquilado la casa fue considerada con nosotros y nos dejó volver hasta la hora que necesitáramos. Eso fue un gran gesto, porque hasta sentí que ahí en Porvenir hacía más frío que en Ushuaia.
Finally, the transfer to Punta Arenas was postponed until almost 2 PM. When everything was ready for the crossing, we were able to board and begin the short but exciting journey. This ship has a large parking lot for vehicles, as well as a passenger cabin with a cafeteria with basic supplies and restrooms. They allowed you to go out on deck with great care, but after a while, we were all forced inside because the strong winds continued.
Finalmente, el traslado a Punta Arenas se postergó hasta casi las 2 PM. Cuando todo estuvo adecuado para cruzar, pudimos embarcar y emprender la corta pero emocionante travesía. Este barco tiene un gran estacionamiento para vehículos, además de una cabina de pasajeros con una cafetería de productos básicos y baños. Te permitían salir a cubierta con mucho cuidado, pero después de un rato, todos fuimos obligados a entrar porque los vientos fuertes aún persisitían.
The Strait of Magellan in southern Chile is special because it's a natural waterway connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It was discovered in 1520 by Ferdinand Magellan, in his quest to find new maritime trade routes. Before that, passage from one ocean to the other was through Cape Horn, further south and more dangerous for navigation. Currently, if you want to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific by water, the safest way is to use the Panama Canal, some 7,000 kilometers to the north, or this passage. Incredible.
El Estrecho de Magallanes al sur de Chile es especial porque es una vía natural que conecta los Océanos Pacífico y Atlántico. Fue descubierto en el año 1520 por Fernando de Magallanes, en su intento de encontrar nuevas rutas marítimas comerciales. Antes de eso, el paso de un océano a otro se hacía a través del Cabo de Hornos, más al sur y más peligroso para la navegación. Actualmente, si se desea ir desde el Océano Atlántico hacia el Pacífico por agua, la forma más segura es utilizar el canal de Panamá unos 7000 kilómetros al norte, o este paso. Increíble.
As for the ride itself, the barge that took us was very comfortable, and although the trip was short, we still wanted to try some of the food they had to offer. The bar was pretty basic and somewhat pricey, but for $12 we were able to get two sandwiches and a hot dog. I love being in tourist mode and being surprised by things that wouldn't surprise locals, like the fact that the sandwich filling is a mysterious orange "cheese." I wouldn't say it was the best thing I've tried, but at least it was good enough to pass the time.
En cuanto al traslado en sí, la barcaza que nos llevó era muy cómoda y aunque el viaje era corto, igual quisimos probar algo de lo que vendían. El bar era bastante escueto y algo costoso, pero por $12 pudimos obtener dos sandwiches y un "pancho". Me encanta estar en modo turista y sorprenderme por cosas que no asombrarían a los locales, como el hecho de que el relleno del sandwich sea un misterioso "queso" naranja. No diría que es lo mejor que probé, pero al menos para pasar el rato estuvo bien.
I don't have much experience taking ferries; in fact, this is the second one I've taken, but it was very different from the first. On that occasion, I had taken one from Buenos Aires to Uruguay to spend just one night in the neighboring country. That ship was much more elegant and touristy than this one, but crossing the Strait of Magellan seemed much more interesting than crossing the Río de la Plata. In any case, this experience going to Punta Arenas was pleasant from beginning to end. The trip was just beginning, and I felt like we had already done a lot, because I didn't know there was still so much more to come ❤️.
No tengo mucho historial tomando ferrys, de hecho este es el segundo al que me subo, pero era muy diferente al primero. En esa ocasión, había tomado uno desde Buenos Aires hasta Uruguay para ir a pasar solo una noche en el otro país vecino. Ese barco era mucho más elegante y turístico que este, pero cruzar el Estrecho de Magallanes me pareció mucho más interesante que cruzar el Río de la Plata. De cualquier forma, esta experiencia yendo a Punta Arenas fue agradable de principio a fin. El viaje recién empezaba y yo sentía que ya habíamos hecho mucho, porque no sabía que todavía faltaba mucho más ❤️.
