Among all the kopitiams around, this one was like a gamble. A gamble that was worth it.
These days I find myself visiting Kopitiam more than any other eatery as often I am with friends or colleagues than alone. Typically, I just love cafe but that doesn’t cater to everyone palate since it’s often western cuisine and rarely Indonesian or Asian cuisine. That’s why, Kopitiam is the most neutral of them all, at least as someone who swears by noodle, kopitiam in Indonesia has the combo I love, coffee and noodle.
Among dozens of Kopitiams out there in Surabaya, that day after the event we happened to pass by this area where our driver mentioned a recently opened food area. There are a few options but the kopitiam has the highest google rate among them all. So, we decided on that place and that felt a little like a gamble. At the time, I simply wished that it tasted fine and it isn’t disappointing as some Kopitiam can feel less authentic.
We were a group of 9 people in the table and ordered variety of menu with some of them to share. One thing I was certainly surprised was their portion sizes which was pretty big and so filling. I personally ordered their egg noddle with chicken chasiu and tasted pretty good. The iced coffee too though I supposed to order their butter coffee as it's a must whenever visiting a Kopitiam.
When I asked around how their food tasted, some of them said it was good but some said the noodle they ordered were a bit soggy. Though if rated, it was 6.5/10 which is pretty good overall. The place is actually pretty convenient considered it has indoor and outdoor selection with properly air conditioned indoor place. Their ordering system is also pretty quick and seamless. All we have to do was scan and directly pay and the waitress will send our food.
For a table that feeds almost 9 hungry people, it was pretty reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised seeing the bills that I thought would amount close to $30 but for those meal and portion, it was less than that. It was well-deserved lunch after our long work and even for me who hasn’t had food since morning, that was so filling and I got back home feeling happy with the meal.
Would I come back again? Definitely. If I happen to visit Surabaya again, this one is on top of my list.
I personally visited some more places since I want to check out Galaxy Mall. There was this go-to pork place that feels comforting called Jack & John Roast Pork. Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures just cause I was busy savoring it. I even ordered Bakkwa 肉干,a chinese sweet and salty dried meat almost like Jerky. It was quite good and I wished I ordered more to-go.
