I've probably been almost everywhere in the Bieszczady Mountains, and even several times in many places, but I've never been to the sources of the San River. Last fall, there was an opportunity to try to meet this challenge. I am talking about a challenge because reaching the source of the San, although it does not require any great mountain climbing, but only a light walk along the valley, is a very long route. From the parking lot to the source of the San, you have to walk over 10 kilometers in one direction, which, according to the trail markings, takes about 3 hours. Reaching the parking lot is also not an easy task, because there is a very, very poor quality dirt road. Just getting to the parking lot from Ustrzyki Dolne took us over an hour and a half. All this meant that we had to revise our plan and postpone reaching the source of the San to another time and end the trip in the former village of Bieniowa.

W Bieszczadach byłem już chyba niemal wszędzie, a w wielu miejscach już nawet po kilka razy, ale u źródeł Sanu nie byłem jeszcze nigdy. Jesienią poprzedniego roku pojawiła się możliwość ku temu aby spróbować sprostać temu wyzwaniu. Mówię o wyzwaniu, ponieważ dojście do źródła Sanu mimo, że nie wymaga żadnych wielkich wspinaczek po górach, a tylko lekkiemu spacerkowi wzdłuż doliny, to jednak jest to bardzo długa trasa. Od parkingu, do źródła Sanu trzeba przejść w jedną stronę ponad 10 kilometrów co zgodnie z oznakowaniem szlaków zajmuje około 3 godzin. Dotarcie do parkingu też nie jest łatwym zadaniem, bo wiedzie tam bardzo, bardzo kiepskiej jakości droga gruntowa. Sam dojazd na parking z Ustrzyk Dolnych zajął nam ponad półtorej godziny. To wszystko sprawiło, że musieliśmy zrewidować nasz plan i dotarcie do źródła Sanu przełożyć na kiedy indziej i wycieczkę zakończyć w dawnej wsi Bieniowa.

The walk to Beniowa led through an extremely picturesque clearing, in the middle of which the San River wound in a very winding way. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't cross the right bank of the San because it belongs to Ukraine, and it must be admitted that the river is so shallow and narrow that crossing it would not pose the slightest problem. Beavers built dams on numerous tributaries of the San, thanks to which these small streams accumulated in a very picturesque way, creating numerous lakes in this clearing.
All that remains of the former village of Beniowa is the cemetery and a few of the oldest trees, which have been included on the list of natural monuments. The cemetery is also just a memory, because there are only a few tombstones that have the shape of a tombstone and not an ordinary stone sticking out of the ground.
When we were returning towards the forest behind which our parking lot was hidden, we heard the signal of an approaching train. It was an amazing thing, because we were completely in the middle of nowhere, and the nearest buildings on the Polish side were several, if not several, kilometers away. It turned out that the situation was completely different on the eastern side of the San. Namely, just behind the mountain there are Ukrainian villages inhabited until now. Moreover, right next to the country's border there is a railway line of the Transcarpathian Railway, which is an everyday means of transport for Ukrainians, and for Polish tourists one of the most interesting tourist attractions of the region.

Spacer do Beniowej wiódł po niezwykle malowniczej polanie, pośrodku której w bardzo kręty sposób wił się San. Na prawy brzegu Sanu choćbym chciał to nie mógłbym przejść, ponieważ należy on do Ukrainy, a trzeba przyznać, że rzeka jest na tyle płytka i wąska, że przejście przez nią nie stanowiłoby najmniejszego problemu. Na licznych dopływach Sanu bobry zbudowały tamy, dzięki czemu te małe potoczki w bardzo malowniczy sposób spiętrzyły się tworząc liczne jeziorka na tej polanie.
Z dawnej wsi Beniowa do dni dzisiejszych pozostał tylko cmentarz oraz kilka najstarszych drzew, które doczekały się wpisania na listę pomników przyrody. Cmentarz to tez już tylko wspomnienie, bo nagrobków które jakakolwiek mają kształt nagrobka, a nie zwykłego kamienia wystającego z ziemi jest zaledwie kilka.
Gdy już wracaliśmy w kierunki lasu, za którym skrywał się nasz parking usłyszeliśmy sygnał nadjeżdżającego pociągu. Niesamowita sprawa, bo przecież byliśmy kompletnie pośrodku niczego, a do najbliższej zabudowy po polskiej stronie mieliśmy dobre kilka jak nie kilkanaście kilometrów odległości. Okazało się, że sprawa wygląda zupełnie inaczej po wschodniej stronie Sanu. Mianowicie tuż za górą znajdują się ukraińskie wioski zamieszkałe aż do teraz. Poza tym tuz przy granicy państw przebiega linia kolejowa kolei Zakarpackiej, która dla Ukraińców jest codziennym środkiem transportu, a dla turystów z Polski jedną z najciekawszych atrakcji turystycznych regionu.
