Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!


Time For Trend Change?

I do think so, it's been quite a couple of years now and honestly I do wonder if the 2024 models are released with yet the same transmission? It must be, or rather we will find out eventually right!

So another one of those fancy smancy DSG double clutches. I do fancy them though!

My personal opinion about this job? Well I would have asked us to at-least service the megatronic. Most people think they save on a few bucks when they deny us something. When in reality they don't, they might if they are lucky but once that megatronic fails you will need to replace both the megatronic and the clutch!

It's Not As Simple, Really!

Most people see these jobs as just a simple clutch replacement, well it is if you know how to but most people don't even know that a clutch can be mounted on the transmission at all! Most people think the clutch bolts down onto the fly-wheel.

This is not your ordinary clutch system!

No No.

This one needs to be calculated and chimmed out! I always start with a 2.7mm chim on boths the clutches and you can work you way up to 3.5 I think. Well for this one we had to push it up to the max at 3.5. Quite odd though (It is driving real smooth though!)

It Looks Fancy Enough, Right?

Well yeah! You do need some sort of special tools to fit these clutches! You really do! Please don't go hammering it in place! That would be catastrophic!

Okay so saying this is a special tool can really fall to both spectrums, the special part.. yes and no! But we made this tool ourselves and it works even better than the original set, at-least for me it does. Likely only because I started learning on that specific tool. Hence it works better for me!

Measure It Up.

Now after you press the clutch into its place, well let's just say the job ain't yet done! I mean we still have to fit it right?

Okay but that's not the problem! Now if I did my chimming correctly the spacing between the clutch plate and the pressure plate should strictly be between 0.4mm and 0.7mm.

Crucially important!

You really don't want to be removing a transmission again just for a simple 0.1mm offset! Nah I wouldn't!

The Final Touches!

Oh this damned damper and cir-clip ring might have once or twice cost me my career!

Laughs okay it was never that bad but it could have been a hell of a lot worse!
If ever you find yourself in need of fitting such a big cir-clip, please make sure it is properly fitted!
It would be a shame if all your hard work came clutching out of the bell-housing!

Well she is ready to be joined to the motor again! What a easy job this was!

Excellent work as you always show us, I can't imagine how tedious it is to center two clutch discs if sometimes just one without the right tool makes us crazy.

Laughs luckily not! These two clutches are sealed within a metal caging, you cant seperate the clutch disc and the clutch plate like you can on a normal manual transmission.

Pretty cool though!
