Viral Japanese Cheesecake (semi homemade) | Cheesecake japonês viral (semi caseiro) [EN/PT]

in Hive Food2 days ago (edited)

I decided to try making the Japanese cheesecake that went viral on social media here in Brazil and around the world. After all, in the various videos and tutorials that appear on TikTok and Instagram, it looks very easy, with only 2 ingredients and without the use of an oven or stove.

Actually, the recommended recipe uses a package of Greek-style yogurt (more consistent) and Biscoff biscuits, Belgian-style flavour (with spices). Since I couldn't find the larger packaging in supermarkets, I used the smaller ones and combined everything in a plastic container. I also used a Brazilian biscuit brand, inspired by its international counterpart.

The recipe simply involves placing the cookies inside the yogurt and putting it in the freezer. After 4 hours it's ready; in my case, I left it overnight. After a quick investigation, I found this article on the Food & Wine website - This Viral Cheesecake Only Uses 2 Ingredients — and It's Shockingly Good - explaining that the dessert was named Japanese cheesecake because it started going viral on social media in Japan.

I also discovered that in Japan the recipe is better known as "Zubora Cheesecake (ズボラチーズケーキ)", which means "lazy cheesecake". And according to this post on the Japanese website Meshipero, the biscuit used is slightly different, with coconut and granulated sugar. It's worth mentioning that there is indeed an original Japanese cheesecake, which is made with whipped egg whites, as in this post published on Hive: Fluffy Keto Japanese Cheesecake.

Although my version looks a little less "processed food," the most popular version is served in the yogurt pot itself. The result is truly surprising, very tasty, and quite similar to cheesecake.

Despite consuming a lot of sausage, cookies, chips, and instant noodles, I know that in Brazil many people are still horrified by this cuisine made only with industrialized ingredients and ultra-processed food (I think this term was even invented by a Brazilian). In this humorous video in Portuguese by @kaoryeats on Instagram, she even jokes that Americans don't cook, they do unboxing.

I remember there was a cable TV channel in the US that showed these recipes under the title "semi homemade," and in one of their YouTube videos I read a European comment saying "semi horrible." Suddenly, the fact that the recipe came from Japan helped it spread around the world, avoiding any possible prejudice against US cuisine and its practical way of preparing meals.

It seems the viral wave hasn't ended yet; people are adapting the recipe to make tiramisu, lemon cheesecake, etc. Given its ease and price, maybe I'll try making those variations too.

What a stroke of fate -- I was literally looking up how to make Japanese cheesecake last night! 😄 I have never made it before and never even bothered to research, and then you post this! It must be a sign to make it.

Your version looks interesting, yogurt and graham crackers. It is very simplistic and great to make in a hurry! Thank you for sharing this 🙏

Thanks for commenting! This recipe is a new version that became popular on social media (because it's easy and tasteful I supose). People call it "Japanese Cheesecake" (and in Japan they named it "Lazy Cheesecake") but there are an older and original "Japanese Cheesecake" recipe that is more elaborated, even with whipped white eggs with the use of... oven!!!. I hope you'll share here in Hive if decided to prepare any of these recipes. Keep safe and good luck again!!
