The Menu

Self-catering breakaways mean...you are catering for yourself, right?

Take 8 women from 8 households, and you could end up at your destination with 8 bottles of coffee, 8 litres of milk, 8 of everything; all basic food supplies duplicated, replicated, and so forth.

To make matters worse, all 8 gals may leave the most basic food ingredient, like salt, behind!
Something so mundane, without salt, food is tasteless - no low-sodium diets for a weekend getaway!

Thankfully that did not happen on a recent trip down the coast with mostly silver-haired old gals.

Basic menu planning made our self-catering getaway a breeze. Some offered their specialties which were added to the menu, what a pleasure!

The bonus was that we did not have any wastage, and everyone repacked unopened nibbles to take back home. We could binge on our favourite treats as consolation for having to split ways and return to the real world!

...and I have a stash of freshly roasted Beaver Creek Coffee to savour and bring back memories of the fabulous coffee tour we went on while down south.

Hubby and I often did do things on the spur of the moment, and end up having wonderfully special times, without any pre-planning.

Some things in life however require careful planning, especially for our silvery years.

It's never too early to look at ways to ensure we can still live a comfortable life, and have the freedom to do the things we love, once that corporate pay-cheque is whittled down to a monthly 'pension'.

Life, however, throws curveballs, and planning for our silver years goes out the window, but it is vital not to lose hope.
It is never too late to start a side hustle, and welcome a brand-new chapter into your life!

Is that fudge? It looks incredible nonetheless. I hope that there will be a recipe post coming soon, and if so please tag me! Or send me the recipe (if it is not a family secret). Skimping! The food looks fabulous and divine! Nothing like a good trip with good food.

Hi @fermentedphil, that is a creamy salted caramel fudge. I used one of my old photos from a POST I authored for adsactly on Steemit way back in 2019, where I shared the step-by-step method.
You should share your version with us if you get to make it. Enjoy!

Oh thank you so much! Interestingly, while reading the first recipe, I gravitated toward making something similar soon! Been on the "dates-train" the last couple of months now. Love those natural sweets, especially date balls. But the recipe you shared before the caramel looks just as fabulous! Thanks so much and I will certainly do so!

I'm also on the date-train, have a terrible sweet tooth but reflux and IBS play up, so dates are my new sweets!
I've been dying to make these date balls again, but still a load of sugar! We won't even talk about the fudge I made! As long as I don't overdo it, I'm fine;)

That is key right, not eating too much! But they are just so good. When I do research, I can mindlessly chomp through a small bag of dates!
I really want to explore date recipes more, I even want to add them to rusks and see how it plays out! Versatile ingredient really.

Very much so, it's a great replacement for sugar. It's delicious in crunchies, I'm curious how it will be in rusks!

I will definitely do a write-up as soon as I make the recipe! Maybe early or mid September, then I will be back in my kitchen (currently visiting the Fiance in Pretoria).

Organized to go have fun, always something forgotten over a weekend away, never a problem normally we survive !LOLZ

Loved the visit through Beaver Creek when down that way a couple of years ago, fascinating places a couple of hours down the coast.

I left my last girlfriend because she wouldn’t stop counting.
I wonder what she’s up to now.

The one thing I dare not forget now that my hair has turned silver, is the meds...Awful! Everything else is no problem.
It's nice to see many places survived COVID lockdown. There are some really nice quaint places on the South Coast.

People in the region are spreading their style in many directions not simply sugar as it used to be, some very interesting places along there.

Meds is one thing we need to pack ourselves, it is awful how quickly you forget to pack some items !LOLZ

The word queue is ironic.
It's just q with a bunch of silent letters waiting in line.

Silver hair old gals make the best sweets!

Haha @dandays, I hope you enjoyed the virtual sweets. I used to over-indulge, but the silver hairs brought on GERD and other nasties, so I very sadly have to behave!

Wonderful your travels, and those dishes look spectacular. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, good friends, as we say here "Life itself" moments not to forget. Good for you dear @lizelle 😀🤗
