What’s in My Cart? Small Grocery Changes for Better Gut Health

in GEMS6 days ago

Wanna see today’s grocery haul? Aside from the usual stuff, I added four new items to my cart to bring some variety to my otherwise boring list. LOL.

Ever since I started experiencing acid reflux, I’ve often opted out of dairy products. But now that my condition has improved, I figured it’s time to add a little more variety to my usual oatmeal breakfast. Along with my go-to banana, I’m now adding chestnuts, digestive biscuits, and low-fat dairy milk.

I’ve been monitoring how my stomach responds to my diet over the past month, and I’m already noticing improvements. However, the simplicity of my meal plan seems to be causing deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals that are essential for better overall health. I suspect I’m especially low on zinc and B vitamins. Over the past month, I avoided heavy red meats and organ meats, and I also consumed very little dairy, which is typically rich in or fortified with these nutrients. Those small sacrifices really helped my acid reflux, and I’m grateful they worked.

Now it’s time to focus on correcting those nutritional gaps, especially in vitamins and protein.

The first thing I’m adding is fortified milk.

I went with the low-fat version so it won’t affect my digestion too much. Regular milk has a high fat content, which can worsen acid reflux. The low-fat option offers extra vitamins with minimal impact on my stomach.

I’m also adding chestnuts to my oatmeal. They’re affordable and packed with minerals that are super helpful for me. A quick Google search told me that chestnuts provide manganese, potassium, folate, and even vitamin C. Sounds like a great addition, not to mention the earthy flavor they’ll bring to my breakfast.

And lastly, I’m thinking of adding some digestive biscuits on the side to improve the texture of my meal. Hahaha. Oatmeal is so mushy and doesn’t really require chewing, so the biscuits will add a fun crunch to my breakfast. Can’t wait!

Thanks for joining me on this little grocery adventure and health update. It feels good to finally start reintroducing variety while staying mindful of what my body needs. Here’s to small changes that make a big difference in both flavor and wellness!
