Japanese Regional Specialty Sweets
Sweets always attract me and, unfortunately, they also addict me, hahaha. However, Japanese sweets are very tiny and delicate, with interesting packaging, so I don’t rush to eat too many. As you know, the Japanese wrapping system for sweets is extremely delicate and intricate. You can’t just grab them and pop them into your mouth. You need a bit of patience to enjoy examining the package, the concept behind it, the history, the hidden meaning, and more. Often, there are small messages on the package or inside the little box. While enjoying the sweets, you can also enjoy reading about them.
My mother sent me a care package the other day. Luckily, it arrived safely and wasn’t too slow. Customs didn’t open the box for inspection, even though they kept it for a while. My mother was worried about the recent oil situation due to wars when she sent the package. Also, I think it arrived just before the big airline accident at the airport. It didn’t happen in this country, but it was the same airline, so the shocking news took our breath away. I feel so sorry for the victims.
There were many delicious-looking foods in the package. There were two boxes of sablé cookies from Hokkaido, Japan. I didn’t know this product, which is made by Kitami Suzuki Confectionery. The packaging looks very pretty. I was curious about the meaning of “Shimaenaga 4 pac” and “Hokkaido 2 pac” on the front of the box. Then I realized it meant there are four packages of cookies shaped like Shimaenaga birds, and two packages shaped like Hokkaido.
Shimaenaga are very rare, tiny, white birds that can only be seen in the Hokkaido area. I feel like I’ve seen them before, but I don’t remember clearly. As a character, the Shimaenaga bird has become very popular in recent years.
I love the Hokkaido-shaped cookies! I often think the shape of Hokkaido is beautiful geographically. It’s fun to draw, colour, and look at. And yes, it’s fun to eat the shape as well. The cookies were so tasty. I finished the whole box very quickly. The other box was for my student, who is always kind to me. I think he and his wife enjoyed them, especially because his wife loves examining Japanese packaging.
When I delivered the cookies, my student gave me a box of Japanese sweets from Kyoto. His friend found it at a local store near our place. If we’re lucky, we can sometimes find Japanese products like this. Inside the box, the tiny packages were shining and dazzling. Everything looked so pretty. There were matcha, hōji tea, and strawberry flavours. The sweets were shaped like little hearts. They tasted quite good. I think I liked all of them, but the houji tea flavour was especially nice. I love the slightly bitter, deep taste of houji tea.
I often give sweets to my student and his wife, and they always give me something even more! It reminds me of the Japanese folktale The Straw Millionaire (Warashibe Chouja わらしべ長者), a story about a poor man who becomes wealthy starting with a single piece of straw. Hopefully, he and his wife enjoy the Hokkaido cookies this time!

日本のご当地スイーツ
スイーツにはいつも惹きつけられ、残念ながら中毒にさえされてしまいます 笑。でも、日本のお菓子はとても小さくて繊細で、さらにパッケージも素敵なので、一度にたくさん食べてしまうことはありません。ご存じのように、日本のお菓子の包装システムはとても繊細で手が込んでいて、どれも急いでつかんで口にポンと放り込むようなものではありません。パッケージを眺めたり、コンセプトや歴史、お菓子に込められた意味などを味わうために、ちょっとした忍耐が必要だと思います。小さなメッセージが箱や袋に書かれていたり、箱の中にも入っていたりすることもよくあります。お菓子を食べながら、その物語を読めます。
先日、母が私にケアパッケージを送ってくれました。幸い無事に届き、到着までにそこまで時間もかかりませんでした。税関でしばらく保管されていたものの、中身は開けられずに済みました。母は、最近の戦争に関連した石油の状況を心配しながら送ってくれたようです。さらに、ちょうど大きな航空事故が起こる直前に入国しました。その事故は国内で起きたわけではありませんが、同じ航空会社だったので、ショッキングなニュースに息をのみました。被害に遭われた方々には本当に心が痛みます。
箱の中には、美味しそうな食べ物がたくさん入っていました。北海道の北見鈴木製菓のサブレが２つ入っていました。この商品は知らなかったのですが、パッケージがとてもきれいです。箱の表面に「Sumaenaga 4 pac」や「Hokkaido 2 pac」と書いてある英語の意味が気になりましたが、箱の中にシマエナガの形のクッキーが4袋、北海道の形のクッキーが２袋入っているという意味だと後々理解しました。
シマエナガは日本では北海道でしか見られないらしく、とても珍しくてかわいい小さな白い鳥です。見たことはあると思ってはいるのですが、はっきり覚えていません。キャラクターとしても、最近とても人気があるそうです。
この北海道の形のクッキーが大好きです！地形としての北海道の形はとても美しいと思っています。描いても、色を塗っても、眺めても楽しい形です。それに、こうして食べるのも楽しい形です。クッキーの味はとても美味しくて、あっという間に全部食べてしまいました。もう１箱は、いつもお世話になっている生徒さんに渡すためのものでした。きっと彼と奥さんで楽しんでくれていると思います。特に奥さんは日本のパッケージを見るのが大好きなので。
クッキーを届けたとき、生徒は逆に京都のお菓子の箱を私にくれました。彼の友人が、この辺りのお店で見つけたものだそうです。こういう日本のものは、運が良ければ時々見つかります。箱の中には小さな個包装がキラキラと輝いていて、すべてがとてもきれいでした。抹茶、ほうじ茶、いちごの味があり、形は小さなハートです。味もなかなかよかったです。全部好きでしたが、ほうじ茶味が特に美味しかったです。ほうじ茶のあの少し苦くて深い味わいが好きです。
私はよく、生徒さんと奥さんにお菓子をあげるのですが、彼らはいつもそれ以上のものを返してくれます！１本のわらから始まって幸せや富を得ていく、日本の民話「わらしべ長者」を思い出してしまいます。。今回も、彼が奥さんと北海道クッキーを楽しんでくれるといいなと思います。
