Home Is What We Make of It

Sometimes, it’s just right there, right in front of us.

Recently, I re-read a book, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. In case you haven’t read it, the idea behind it is that it reminds us to cherish and savor the present- Not yesterday or tomorrow either, just the now. This weekend was about that too, how I was able to spend time with my mom.

I’ve talked about the joys that need no explanation before and lately, in my attempt to start living the way I like and want it to be, I drag my mom along in my journey. I told her that I was so unhappy these past two years and that the reason was because I lived someone else’s life and not mine. She was more than happy that I was involving more of her in my life.

My mom likes to read and that’s what she spent her time on, reading novels day and night. As much as I don’t mind about it, I really want her to do something else, something that gets her moving and introduces novelty in her life.

I am sure nothing is really new to her other than some added technology in the way we do things. But, my mom was beyond excited when I showed her some Japanese recipes that we normally get from cafes.

Oyakodon Our Style

Recently I also ordered a new chopping board, something a lot bigger than our previous board. It is made from Mahogany and just like the way I see it over my favorite cooking channel. I can see why they always use bigger boards because that helps chop more ingredients and not going to like, it looks aesthetic too.

So the first thing we want to cook with this newly polished baby is a Japanese donburi called Oyakodon. It’s simple and easy to make especially if you’re looking for a comforting meal. We did a few twists such as adding mushrooms into the egg mixture and using chicken and beef.

The thing is, I was also going for Gyudon but I lack some ingredients for it, so we simply stick to Oyakodon in our twist.

The first honor of the chopping goes to the champignon mushroom. Then spring onion.

If you’re seeing that much of spring onion and mushroom, I was also teaching my mom how to chop. Knife skill is very important to have and the way she chops isn’t as fast nor as efficient as chefs do. So, I showed her some tricks and tips to hold a knife and do it.

A simple home remodel

After we had our delicious lunch, our order of wallpaper came through. We have some walls that need to be covered and rather than going for a fresh paint, we decided on a more economical option, wallpaper and stickers.

I had my study/office desk repainted but I didn’t really like how it turned out. It was pretty expensive and since I want to actually remodel the house at one point, it made more sense to choose the cheapest option that would last for another two or three years.

My coffee table gets a new look as well. My mom helped me with it and now my table is looking clean and fresh. I can’t wait to share more coffee beans and finds from this tiny table.

One big realization is that home is really what we make of it. I stop caring whether it’s aesthetic or not but a home should reflect my personality and something that truly feels me. I don’t need top of the line gadgets, as long as it still works and has a room in my home, I would make the best of it.

We changed some of our walls too and was really happy about it.

The sweetest ending….

After hard laborious work of sticking all the wallpaper, it’s time to actually get something sweet. For the past three days I’ve been trying to make mochi.

I failed a couple of times before I was finally able to make this chewy soft and delicious mochi. This mochi isn’t actually hard to make, you just need to find people who won’t lie to you or complicate the recipe for you.

For that recipe, I had my fair share trying youtuber recipes but I failed until I found my foolproof way of making it without having to complicate the ingredients and the step

You only need 3 ingredients, water, glutinous rice flour and sugar. Then, if you don’t have a microwave, you only have to steam the mixture for about 15-20 minutes. Next is that you need to transfer it into a cooked cornstarch flour and add any fillings that you enjoy. Serve with hot tea and you’ll have the sweetest night ever.

It was a nice day for both my mother and I after a while. So, I hope our good vibes are transferred through this writing. See you around 🙂

Last but not least, some of my kittens want to say Hi!

That's a lovely, upbeat post. It looks like a lot of hard work, though but always easier with two and so wonderful to have the time together.
The kittens are, of course, gorgeous!
The stick on bricks I recognise from Shopee! We used them at our house in Bangkok as a quick fix for a terrible wall and they look fine, getting them straight when cuts are required isn't easy though. I see you let your mum do the hard bits !

I hope you've both had a lovely Easter weekend. Take care and best wishes :-)

The sticky stuff isn't really easy to stick. Some people over here hired workers to do it but I have my mom 🤣 she does better with straight lines and cutting. I hope you had a great easter, come to think of it, May is my season, maybe that's why I feel a little more upbeat than the usual.

Have a great week Nathen 😊

Wow! You did well with your home remodelling project! Well-deserved meals and dessert. Yummy! ♥️

😆hehe thank you, despite it might looks inedible for some, they're not that bad actually.
