ต้มยำรสแซ่บ (กุ้ง-ไก่)

Hello, My friends 🤗

For this post, I’ll be sharing the recipe and steps for making Tom yum with shrimp and chicken, a dish I regularly enjoy.

Tom yum is originally a traditional dish from Central Thailand, but over time, it has become popular across all regions. It’s a Thai food favorite, both domestically and internationally—especially Tom Yum Goong (spicy shrimp soup). The dish is primarily sour and spicy, with a hint of saltiness and sweetness, and it’s fragrant with aromatic herbs. It’s typically served with rice. Beyond its delicious taste, tom yum is also nutritious and offers health benefits.

Tom Yum with Shrimp & Chicken (Authentic Thai Recipe)

  • Serves 2-3
  • Prep: 15 mins
  • Cook: 20 mins

Ingredients

  • 200 grams of fresh shrimps

  • 200 grams of chicken meat

  • 3 tomatoes

  • 5 fresh chilies

  • 5 kaffir lime leaves

  • 1 cup lemongrass

  • 1/2 cup galangal

  • 1/2 cup shallots

  • 50 grams of mushrooms

  • 3 tablespoons of Lime juice

  • 2 tablespoons of fish sauce

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar

Procedure

  • Prepare the shrimp: Peel and devein the shrimp, removing the heads. Make a shallow cut along the back to remove the dark vein. Rinse and drain well. Set aside.

  • Prepare the chicken: Rinse the chicken, pat dry, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.

  • Prep the herbs and vegetables:
    • Wash all vegetables thoroughly.
    • Cut lemongrass and galangal into pieces.
    • Quarter the tomatoes.
    • Tear the kaffir lime leaves.
    • Lightly crush the fresh chilies and peeled shallots. Set aside.

  • Cook the broth:

  • Pour water into a pot and bring to a medium boil.
  • Add galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and shallots. Let it simmer until fragrant.

  • Add the chicken:
    • Once boiling, add the chicken pieces and wait for it to boil again.

  • Add vegetables and herbs:
    • Toss in the mushrooms, fresh chilies, and tomatoes. Stir well.

  • Season the soup:
    • Flavor with sugar, lime juice, and fish sauce to taste. Let it boil.

  • Add the shrimp:
    • Finally, add the fresh shrimp and cook just until they turn pink (do not overcook).
    • Turn off the heat.

  • Serve:
Traditional Pairing:Jasmine rice or as a standalone soup.

Chef’s Notes

  • Depth Hack: Add 1 tbsp nam prik pao (Thai chili paste) for smoky richness.
  • Vegetarian:Use tofu + mushroom stock, substitute fish sauce with soy sauce.
  • Storage:Consume immediately (herbs lose fragrance upon reheating).

Health Benefits of Tom Yum with Shrimp and Chicken

  • High-quality protein from shrimp and chicken, which supports muscle growth and repair.
  • Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from herbs like lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, fresh chilies, and lime - boosting immunity and fighting inflammation.
  • Improved digestion - Lemongrass and galangal help relieve bloating, reduce gas, and aid in digestion.
  • Low in calories, yet flavorful, making it a great option for a healthy, satisfying meal.
  • Metabolism boost from spicy chilies, which may help with fat burning.

Shrimp is expensive here to have in kitchen, what about here?

I was in Saudi Arabia the first time i tasted tomyum. My partner used to bought it during lunch or dinner. There was a Thai restaurant beside our apartment. From then on, I can’t forget how tom yum tastes like. The sour savory soup, the seafood in it and the spices makes me drool when I think of it. I was looking for it when we returned her in the Philippines and tried to cook one time. But I couldn’t get the exact taste. I even bought cupped noodles in tom yum flavor. I really miss the real tom yum.

Very yummy food! I need to take some cooking lessons!

Tom yum looks good! I never know that you can combine chicken and shrimp! 😁

I already tried this dish when we visited Thailand. I absolutely loved it! The taste were so bold and delicious, and I especially enjoyed the spicy kick. It’s one of my favorite dishes from our trip!😍
