What is a Nor'easter?
Phew… We had another big snowstorm this time. I’ve had enough snowstorms this season. I was hoping that the last big one was literally the last one, but it wasn’t. Truly, I knew it wouldn’t be the last one. Honestly, snowstorms are not as simple or easy as we expect. Usually, in February or even in March, we get one last big snowstorm.
This time, it was called a “Nor’easter.” A Nor’easter is a large-scale extratropical cyclone that affects the east coast of North America, especially Nova Scotia in Canada and the northeastern United States.
The origin of the name “Nor’easter” comes from the strong winds that blow from the northeast along the coast. These northeasterly winds carry moist air from the ocean, bringing heavy snow, rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding to affected areas. It was very cold, and the snow looked like it would never stop all night long.
I didn’t want to do a lot of snow shovelling the next day, so I shovelled in the evening instead. The snow was heavy, wet, and tough. I injured my shoulder again, as usual. I know I should switch hands sometimes, but I’m right-handed, so using my right hand feels faster and easier.
The next day, it was silent. That silence means we have a lot of snow after a big storm. I slowly opened the blinds and noticed squirrel footprints in the snow in front of the door. They can jump well in deep snow, but not us.
Another big shovelling job was waiting for us. Wow… I think it was over 40 cm or more. It took an hour to clear the front porch and the path to the driveway. However, the driveway was still packed with thick snow. We were waiting for our snowplow guy. Thankfully, he came in the afternoon. He had to do extra work because of the heavy snowfall.
Oh no!! I noticed water dripping from the window frame. We realized this would be our issue this winter. We had noticed damage to the living room window frame before, but we never knew why it had happened. Finally, we found out the reason for this season.
The roof has been holding thick ice and snow this winter. I had been worried about it. The angle of our roof doesn’t allow the snow to slide off smoothly. That’s why the ice and snow got stuck up there. So, we had to do something.
My husband had to postpone his shift. He went to the hardware store and bought special salt and a long rake, which I had never seen before. The hardware store lady advised him to melt the ice using boiled water as well. They often give us helpful hints about how to live through winter and summer in this area.
I had to boil water many times… Finally, the thick ice melted along the edge of the roof. After a while, the leaking stopped. We decided to install heat tape (a de-icing cable) next season. It looks like road heating, but for the roof. We’ll have to use electricity for it, though.
We just received an expensive electricity bill yesterday. The power bill went up again! The company keeps raising their rates year by year, even though we often have power outages… I think our ceiling fan cost a lot this season. It works well, but it uses quite a bit of electricity.
Back to the snow shovelling topic, I didn’t like the heavy snow shovel that has been here since the previous owner’s time. It’s solid because it’s old, but it’s so heavy, and it always kills my arm. I had wanted to buy a lighter one for many years. Finally, I asked my husband to get one when he went to buy the long rake.
We had ramen during this Nor’easter snowstorm. I’m glad we didn’t lose power this time. Luckily, I could cook whatever I wanted on the snow day. The ramen warmed both my body and my heart.
Hopefully, no more big storms!

ノーイースターって何？
ふう…、また大きな大雪が来ました。もう吹雪は十分です。前回の大雪が本当に最後だといいなと思っていたのですが、そうもいきませんでした。本当は、心の中ではまだ来るだろうと分かってはいたのですが…。正直、大雪は思っているほど単純でも楽なものでもありません。例年、２月や３月には最後の一撃のように大雪が来ます。
今回の嵐はノーイースターと呼ばれるものでした。北アメリカ東海岸、特にカナダのノバスコシア州やアメリカ北東部に影響を与える大規模な低気圧です。
名前の由来は、海岸沿いに北東から吹きつける強い風という意味らしいです。この風が海から湿った空気を運び、大雪や大雨、強風、沿岸の洪水をもたらすそうです。その夜は本当に寒く、雪は一晩中、永遠に降り続くかのように振り続けていました。
翌日になるべく大がかりな雪かきをしたくなかったので、夜のうちに先に雪かきをしました。雪は重くて湿っていて、かなり大変でした。いつものように肩を痛めてしまいました。時々利き手を替えればいいと分かっているのですが、右利きなので、どうしても右手ばかり使ってしまいます。
翌朝は静寂に包まれていました。その静けさはたくさん積もったという合図でもあります。おそるおそるブラインドを開けると、玄関前の雪の上にリスの足跡がありました。リスは深い雪の上でも軽やかに跳ねられるけれど、私たちはそうはいきません。
また大きな雪かき作業が待っていました。おそらく４０cm以上は積もっていたと思います。玄関と私道部分までの通路をきれいにするのに約１時間はかかりました。私道はまだ分厚い雪で覆われていて、除雪業者さんを待ちました。午後に来てくれて、本当に助かりました。雪が多すぎて、いつも以上に大変そうでした。
さらに問題が…。窓枠から水が垂れてきているのに気づきました。以前からリビングの窓枠にダメージ部分があるのは分かっていましたが、原因が不明でした。今年ようやく理由が分かりました。
屋根の上に分厚い氷と雪が溜まっていたいたので、心配していました。我が家の屋根の角度は雪が自然に滑り落ちる形ではなく、氷と雪がそのまま残ってしまいます。
主人が仕事を中断し、ホームセンターへ行ってくれました。特別な塩と、見たこともない長いレーキを買ってきてくれました。店員さんに、熱湯で氷を溶かす方法も教えてもらいました。この地域では、冬も夏も、こういう知恵をお店の人から学ぶことが多いです。
何度もお湯を沸かし、ようやく屋根の端の厚い氷が溶けました。しばらくすると、水漏れも止まりました。来シーズンは屋根用の融雪ケーブルを設置しようかと考えています。屋根の上のロードヒーティングのようなものですが、電気代がかかります…。
昨日は高額な電気代の請求も届きました。年々値上がりしているのに、停電は相変わらず起きます…。今シーズンはシーリングファンも使っているので、かなり電気を使った気がします。
ずっと惰性で使っていた古い雪かきスコップ。前のオーナーの代からある丈夫なものですが、とにかく重いのです。ここ数年、軽いタイプが欲しいと思っていました。今回、主人にお願いしてついに新しい軽量のものを買うことにしました。
嵐の日にはラーメンを食べました。停電しなかったことに感謝です。雪の日でも好きなものを作って食べられるのは幸せに感じました。ラーメンが体も心も温めてくれました。
