I learned about the origin of the name ”Tiramisu" from a YouTube video by a Pilates instructor who had an Italian partner. It means “pick me up” or “lift me up,” which makes sense—it’s a dessert that feels both comforting and uplifting just by its name.
I remember it was introduced in 90s in Japan and since then it's one of my favorite sweets. When I find it during travel I try it and also I make it myself at home. I also pick Tiramisu ice cream some times. That much I like it ☺️
My recipe is incredibly easy. Simply layer biscotti soaked in coffee with a cream made from mascarpone, fresh cream, and sugar. No baking required! It's perfect especially for hot season like now.
This year, I made a version that everyone in the family could enjoy. My partner isn’t comfortable with raw eggs, so I skip eggs. My daughter loves bitter flavors but she is at an age where we’re trying to limit caffeine—especially in the evenings—so I kept that in mind too. And also my partner wants to avoid caffeine. So I use instant decaf.
In the middle of tax filing, when my brain felt like it was melting and my body was exhausted, this dessert gently supported me. It really did feel like it was pulling me upward, just as the name promises. Sharing a small dessert with my partner at night was also a nice moment, and I’m already thinking of making another quick sweet treat.
Doesn't learning the meaning behind the name 'Tiramisu' make you want to try making it yourself? I'm thinking of trying a matcha version next 🍵
(Ah, Italians have so much nice food. Probably it is the reason I can continue studying Italian on Duolingo 🇮🇹)
