I already knew that one of the downsides of staying at a hotel was that day after day I would have to take care of finding my own lunches and dinners. Since this stay was short, I decided not to worry too much about it and to embrace the challenge. I’d say the hardest thing in Formosa was finding a place to eat that didn’t close so early, because after 1 PM, with the arrival of the intense heat, the city would turn into a ghost town 😃.
Ya sabía que una de las contras que tenía el hecho de hospedarse en un hotel era que día tras día iba a tener que ocuparme de conseguir mis almuerzos y cenas. Como esta estadía era corta, decidí no hacerme mucho problema por esto y aceptar el desafío. Diría que lo más difícil en Formosa fue encontrar un local de comidas que no cerrara tan temprano, ya que después de la 1 PM, con la llegada del calor intenso, este lugar se transformaba en la ciudad fantasma 😃.
I would usually go out for my walks around the city at sunset, but on the previous days this meant skipping lunch and having to wait a long time before eating something. Since on my third day in Formosa I had the morning free, I decided it would be a good opportunity to explore the city under a different light. I had already visited the riverfront, so that time my walk focused on the other side of the city, where I was able to see all kinds of buildings, both old and modern.
Generalmente salía a dar mis paseos por la ciudad al atardecer, pero en los días previos, esto me dejaba sin almuerzo y tenía que esperar mucho para poder comer algo. Como en mi tercer día en Formosa tuve la mañana libre, decidí que sería una buena oportunidad para ir a recorrer un poco la ciudad con otra luz. La costanera ya la había visitado, así que esa vez mi paseo se concentró hacia el otro lado de la ciudad, en donde pude ver edificios de todo tipo, antiguos y modernos.
Unlike many other places in Argentina, the capital city of the province of Formosa does not have the typical layout of a central square surrounded by emblematic buildings. That’s why one of the main squares, Plaza General San Martín, was located about six blocks away from the local cathedral. This made me walk a bit farther to see the square, but it was still worth continuing to explore those streets.
A diferencia de muchos otros lugares en Argentina, la capital de la provincia de Formosa no tiene la típica distribución de plaza y edificios emblemáticos alrededor. Es por eso que una de las plazas principales, la plaza General San Martín, se encontraba como a seis cuadras de la catedral local. Esto me obligó a caminar un poco más para ver la plaza, pero igual valió la pena seguir recorriendo estas calles.
You can imagine that close to midday the heat was terribly stifling, so there weren’t many people out and about. It felt like a Sunday in Buenos Aires, but it was simply an ordinary weekday in the interior of my country. The entire main square was covered with trees, yet they still weren’t enough to shield from the more than 30 degrees Celsius we were experiencing in the middle of autumn.
Se imaginarán que casi a la hora del mediodía el calor era terriblemente sofocante, así que no había mucha gente dando vueltas. Parecía un día domingo en Buenos Aires, pero simplemente era un día de semana común en el interior de mi país. Toda la plaza principal estaba cubierta de árboles, pero igual no eran suficientes para los más de 30 grados que hacía en el pleno otoño.
A pleasant surprise in this square was spotting a type of vegetation I had never seen before. These were giant, round, green leaves decorating the fountain. This kind of plant is called a water lily, and until then I had only seen it in movies. The leaves floated freely on the water, and I was amazed by how large they were. I was glad to discover them with the sun at its highest point, because their color looked bright and beautiful.
Una grata sorpresa de esta plaza fue que vi un tipo de vegetación que nunca antes había visto. Se trataba de estas hojas gigantes, redondas y verdes, adornando toda la fuente del lugar. Este tipo de planta se llama Nenúfar, y hasta el momento solo la había visto en películas. Estas hojas flotaban libremente en el agua y me sorprendió lo grandes que eran. Me alegré de descubrirlas con el sol en su punto más alto, porque su color se veía brillante y hermoso.

Everything was going very well on my morning walk, but I still hadn’t found any place selling something to eat. According to the map, I wouldn’t find anything open on the main street, so I had to make a small detour. Along the way, I came across another lovely church, which once again looked like it belonged to a ghost town because there was hardly anyone around. That’s the effect the imminent siesta hour has here.
Todo estaba marchand muy bien con mi paseo matutino, pero aún no encontraba ningún lugar que me vendiera algo para comer. Según el mapa, en la calle principal no encontraría nada abierto, así que tuve que desviarme un poco. En este paso me encontré con otra linda iglesia, que una vez más, parecía de un pueblo fantasma porque no había casi nadie en ella. Ese es el efecto que hace la inminente hora de la siesta por aquí.
And just when everything seemed lost, I finally came across an open rotisserie. Finding it felt like seeing water in the desert—I was truly starving and overheated by then. As an extra bonus, the prices were very good: for this Spanish omelet with salad, I paid only $5, a reasonable price considering I ate just half and saved the rest for dinner. I was also glad they offered something other than empanadas, the menu item I had grown tired of eating on this trip.
Y cuando todo parecía perdido, finalmente me encontré con una rotisería abierta. Encontrarla fue como ver agua en el desierto: realmente ya estaba muriendo de hambre y de calor. Como un plus extra, este lugar tenía unos precios muy buenos: por esta tortilla con ensalada apenas pagué $5, un precio razonable considerando que solo comí la mitad y el resto me quedó de cena. También me alegré que ofrecieran algo más que empanadas, el menú que me cansé de comer en este viaje.
Once my stomach was full and my desire to see a bit more of the city of Formosa had been satisfied, it was time to head back. The hotel I had chosen might have had its structural or hygiene shortcomings, but fortunately it had an air conditioner that worked perfectly—so I was definitely going to use it. I couldn’t leave this place without experiencing the famous siesta that everyone enjoys there; even that had to become part of my travel anecdotes ❤️.
Cuando mi estómago estuvo lleno y mis ganas de ver un poco más de la ciudad de Formosa estuvieron saciadas, fue hora de volver. El hotel que había elegido ahí podía tener sus deficiencias edilicias o de higiene, pero afortunadamente tenía un aire acondicionado que funcionaba perfecto así que iba a usarlo. No me podía ir de este lugar si experimentar la famosa siesta que todos disfrutan ahí: hasta eso tenía que ser parte de mis anécdotas viajeras ❤️.
